Many dictionaries and reference books for beginning level students introduce English sounds by means of katakana. Students are likely to get accustomed to substituting English sounds for kanakana. The prolonged Ll transfer can have negative effects on other language skills such as listening and reading. Several researches to support the idea are introduced. Finally, suggestions for improving pronunciation instruction for Japanese students are discussed.
