Two kinds of manuscripts Zuho-Sanbushu (A.D. 1686) and Kikugensho (1685) are known, which show the early contents of surveying system of Shimizu Taemon Sadanori. Kikugensho has been written by Shimizu Kurobei Katsunori which is the previous name of Shimizu Taemon Sadanori. In the old Zuho-Sanbushu, the important surveying instrument is Shokiku which has later been evolved to Kikugenki by Shimizu. Kikugenki has firstly described in the Scroll of Genroku-Yo-nen (1691). Bundo-no-kane is a kind of protractor connected with a twelfth circle and a ruler, which has also been evolved by Shimizu. Caliper compasses (dividers) were introduced by western sailors. Ita-jogi or Kenban is a kind of plane board and the original instrument in Shimizu s surveying school, and its using method is described in Kikugensho.
