29 Industrial Cluster of Porcelain in Jingdezhen by the perspective of innovation process Yuko Oki ABSTRACT The history of Jingdezhen porcelain can be traced back over 1900 years to the Han Dynasty. Through consistent innovation in the creation of ever more beautiful products at the government run and private sector porcelain furnaces, Jingdezhen succeeded in becoming the world center for porcelain production. In this traditional craft cluster, a high degree of division of labor had been introduced to increase the efficiency of mass production. Following a long absence because of the Great Cultural Revolution, Jingdezhen has again started to produce artistic porcelain, in addition to the mass produced daily tableware and industrial products. A joint collaboration between government and private sectors is attempting to restore Jingdezhen as the world center of porcelain production. In this paper, the historical and present situations in Jingdezhen are analyzed from the viewpoint of the innovation process in the cluster.
