Combined Sounds To make combined sounds, always use the や ゆ よ in combination with an い sound of any of the hiragana. The initial sound is written as a standard size symbol, while the や ゆ よ are written smaller, half size. When written in romaji, the sounds of the initial sound and the ya, yu, yo sound combined. For example: ki + ya becomes kya ( き + や きゃ ). kya きゃきゃ gya ぎゃ ぎゃ kyu きゅきゅ gyu ぎゅ ぎゅ kyo きょきょ gyo ぎょ ぎょ sha しゃしゃ ja じゃ じゃ shu しゅしゅ ju じゅ じゅ sho しょしょ jo じょ じょ cha ちゃちゃ nya にゃ にゃ chu ちゅちゅ nyu にゅ にゅ cho ちょちょ nyo にょ にょ hya ひゃひゃ bya びゃ びゃ hyu ひゅひゅ byu びゅ びゅ hyo ひょひょ byo びょ びょ pya ぴゃぴゃ mya みゃ みゃ pyu ぴゅぴゅ myu みゅ みゅ pyo ぴょぴょ myo みょ みょ rya りゃりゃ ryu りゅりゅ ryo りょりょ じゅうしょ (dictionary) しゃしん (photo) じゃまた (see you again) しんじゅく きゅうりょう (salary) とうきょう kaisha (company) okyaku (guest) kanojo (she) shuumatsu (weekend) sanbyakuen (300 Yen) shukudai (homework) kyukyusha (ambulance) chuukaryouri (chinese food)
Small Tsu The small つ changes the way we say a word. Instead of being even on every syllable, there is a small jump in the word. When it is written, the small つ doubles the next letter always a consonant. For example; yokatta is written よかった and ほっぺ is written hoppe. The small つ is written half the size of a standard character, the same way the や ゆ よ in combined sounds. Remember to write it smaller, so that it is not mistaken for a normal つ. いっぽん (one long object) いっかい (once) いっこ (one small object) きっぷ (ticket) いっぴき (one small animal) がっこう (school) zasshi (magazine) yokka (fourth) juppun (ten minutes) mikka (third) issho (together) roppyakuen (600 Yen) kitte (stamp) matte (wait) Use the following words to label kerokerokeroppi s family photo below in hiragana. okaasan mum otousan dad ojiisan grandpa obaasan grandma oniisan big brother oneesan big sister imouto little sister otouto little brother
