Modes of Study One or more of the following modes of study are offered at each Tokyo metropolitan high school: 1. Full-time Classes are held in the daytime from morning to afternoon (traditional high school). 2. Part-time Classes are held in the evenings and at other set times. 3. Correspondence While receiving guidance on course work, students study at home and attend school on set dates (about twice a month) to meet with an instructor in person. Academic Year System and Credit System 1. Academic year system Under this system, the content and curriculum to be studied are set for each academic year. When a student is deemed to have met set academic requirements, credits are awarded, and the student is promoted to the next grade level. The student will graduate upon completion of a three-year program at a full-time school or four-year program at a part-time school (some part-time schools offer three-year programs). 2. Credit system Under this system, no distinctions are made between grade levels. In addition to required courses, students also choose elective courses to complete. When a student is deemed to have met the set academic requirements, and has acquired the prescribed number of credits over the course of enrollment, the student can proceed to graduate. Academic Programs *Academic achievement test-based admissions for the 2015 academic year are planned for the programs listed below. 1. General education program Studies mainly focus on Japanese, geography and history, civics, mathematics, science, health and physical education, the arts, foreign languages, home economics, and information. Each area of curriculum is further divided into several subjects. In accordance with the curriculum established by the school, students take courses that include required subjects and electives. This program provides the appropriate foundation for a wide range of post-graduation options, including advancement to university, junior college, a technical school, and/or finding employment. 2. General education program with a specialized focus This program is a part of the general education program, however, places a focus on specific areas of curriculum, offering a variety of elective courses, in order to better meet the interests and aspirations of students. Starting from the first year, students with a specialized focus (foreign language, culture, the arts, and information) follow a separate program from those in the general education program. 3. Agricultural program The program aims to train specialists that can play an active role in the field of agriculture. By engaging in the cultivation of agricultural products and raising farm animals, students acquire specialized skills and knowledge, including in the field of biotechnology, while becoming familiar with nature. 4. Technical program Aiming to train specialists that will be successful in each area of industry, the program enables students to acquire specialized knowledge, manufacturing and high-tech skills, as well as other technical skills. 5. Science and technology program Studying science and technology from a broad perspective, students acquire the fundamentals needed to build expertise at universities and other institutions specializing in science following graduation. This program is offered at Kagaku Gijutsu High School and Tama Kagaku Gijutsu High School. 6. Dual system program Students undergo long-term vocational training at manufacturing companies for school credit, allowing them to acquire practical skills. Following graduation, the student may also have the opportunity to work for the company where vocational training was received, should such an agreement be reached. This program is offered at Rokugo Koka High School. 7. Commerce program The program aims to cultivate people who are capable of playing an active role in various fields of business, including accounting and information processing, and adapting to the rapid pace of internationalization. Through the course offered, students will acquire specialized knowledge and skills. 8. Business communication program This program aims to develop individuals capable of navigating the rapidly changing social and business environment. Students study English and practical business subjects with the goal of entering universities with a focus on social science and the humanities. This program is offered at Ota Sakuradai High School and Chihaya High School. 9. Information studies program In order to proactively and reasonably address the issues of an advanced information and telecommunications society, and cultivate creativity and practicality that will contribute to the development of society, the program enables students to obtain a range of skills and knowledge related to information studies. Industry studies program Students learn about the connection between production, logistics, and consumption, and build entrepreneurial spirit. Social welfare program Students develop a strong respect for human life as they undergo practical training and work experience at various social welfare facilities, including child daycare centers and hospitals. The program aims to produce graduates who will act to serve and aid society. This program is offered at Nozuta High School. 13. Arts program The program aims for students to develop aesthetic sensibility and the ability to express themselves through the study of specialty subjects related to music, art, and acting, and to produce graduates who will contribute to the development of the arts in the future. At Sogo Geijutsu High School, music, art, and stage expression departments have been established. 14. Physical education program Specialty courses related to physical education and sports enable students to acquire knowledge and skills in the health and physical education fields. In addition to general courses, specialized instruction in areas such as volleyball, basketball, soccer, gymnastics, track and field, swimming, judo and kendo is offered. This program is offered at Komaba High School and Nozuta High School. 15. International program Students learn about topics such as international relations, traditional Japanese culture, and cross-cultural understanding, and learn through a research project-oriented method that allows them to explore a theme they select. The program also aims to have students acquire a good command of a foreign language such as English. Through these studies, the program fosters students with a rich sense of global awareness and graduates who can be active in the international society. At the International Studies Program offered at Kokusai High School, students can learn languages such as German, French, Spanish, Chinese or Korean, in addition to English. The International Baccalaureate Programme for students aiming to advance to a university abroad will be newly established in the 2015 academic year (Aims to obtain International Baccalaureate accreditation within the 2015 academic year). At Oshima Kaiyo Kokusai High School, the Oceanic International Studies Program has been established to offer practical training in international navigation and observation navigation. 16. Integrated studies program Students select courses that best suit their needs and future goals from a range of general and specialty subjects, and then take a systematic and focused approach to studies. All students take the course titled Industrial Society and Humanity, a subject unique to the integrated studies program, which requires students to consider their own lifestyles and future. The program is offered as a full-time program at Harumi Sogo, Tsubasa Sogo, Setagaya Sogo, Suginami Sogo, Oji Sogo, Katsushika Sogo, Ome Sogo, Machida Sogo, Higashikurume Sogo, and Wakaba Sogo high schools, and as a part-time program at Roppongi, Oedo, Setagaya Izumi, Minorigaoka, Kirigaoka, Ome Sogo, and Higashikurume Sogo high schools. 17. Combined programs At designated schools, this program combines two different fields of study. This type of program is called a combined program. Combined programs are offered as full-time programs at Oshima High School (agriculture and forestry/home economics), Miyake High School (agriculture/home economics) and Hachijo High School (horticulture/home economics), and as part-time programs at Itsukaichi High School (general education/commercial) and Mizuho Nogei High School (general education/agriculture). -8-
