My host family took me to see a bunraku play last weekend. It was very interesting. Today, I d like to tell you about bunraku. Bunraku is a traditional puppet play in Japan. First of all, can you guess how tall bunraku puppets are? They are usually about a meter tall. Some puppets are very heavy and weigh about 20 kg. Three puppeteers move each puppet on the stage. This is very unusual for a puppet play. The main puppeteer controls the puppet s head and right hand. Another moves the left hand, and the other, the feet. The faces of the last two puppeteers are covered so that we cannot see them. The puppets movements are very interesting. Some of the puppets have eyes and mouths that can open and close, and others have eyebrows that can move up and down. Their fingers can move as well. Various emotions can be expressed by subtle movements. Surprisingly, puppets can also ride horses, climb up and down ladders, and even play the koto. I saw the three puppeteers move as one and breathe life into a puppet. Eventually, I became less aware of the three and focused more on the puppet. I found it fascinating.
