1 The Concept of Interest in Kant s Critical Philosophy Suzu NAKAMURA This paper considers the concept of interest within the philosophy of Immanuel Kant ( ). The interpretations regarding the concept of interest in Kant s philosophy have been treated diversely and ambiguously; therefore, comprehensive understandings are quite few. Taking into account these current researches, the purpose of this study is to gain a systematic understanding of the concept of interests in Kant s philosophy. The first section deals with the definition of interest which is presented in Kant s works. According to the Lexicon which had been used in the eighteenth century and Kant s own works, it is revealed that his notion of interest is a subjective representation of self-profit. On the basis of this understanding, the second section handles the notion of interest, especially the theoretical interest in Critique of Pure Reason. This interest in certain details appears to us as a problematic notion, which leads us to a certain self-contradiction, thus antinomy of pure reason. Moreover, I also refer to the architectonic interest of pure reason. The third section argues about practical interest in Critique of Practical Reason. There are two types of practical interests, the one is the interest in happiness, and the other one is in moral acts. These two interests bring about dialectic of pure reason in the same way as the first critique. In addition, a relation between the practical interest and the subjective incentive to acts, especially the relationship to the concept of respect is pointed out in this section. The final section intends to make clear the function of some kinds of interests in Critique of Judgement. This section discusses the substantial theory that the judgement of the beautiful does not depend on any interests. After this investigation about the disinterested-judgement, I also consider the intellectual interest in beautiful existence in the nature. Through this study, we find that the interests of reason play significant roles as fundamental principles through three critiques, and we can confirm that the reason s interest is the very concept that gives Kant s critical philosophy a systematic unity.
