2 This year's birthday will be the first one I will spend in Tokyo, because I was always away from Japan in August since I joined Tokyo RC in During the hot summer season I always tried to combine my vacation with some business obligations in Europe and with visiting my adult children who live in Germany and the U. S. respectively. It is since many years my happy tradition to take the opportunity of my summer vacation and travel to the Salzburg music and opera festival in Austria. On weekends in Tokyo I try to get one day also regularly attending the classical music out of this very busy city to enjoy a round of golf with my wife. My wife and myself are

3 programmes which the Tokyo concert halls offer. We enjoy the Japanese orchestras and soloists as much as guest musicians from all over the world. The recent concert with Maurice Andr"(trumpet), his children(trumpet and oboe) in the Suntory Hall sponsored by our fellow Rotarian Chris McDonald was a real highlight for us.

92 Rotary Club of Tokyo for your many kindnesses extended during our recent visit to Japan. We have attended fifteen Rotary International Conventions and this was the most enjoyable. The convention was made a success for us not only by the Osaka Rotary Convention and Kyoto Day Committees but in particular by the graciousness of Tokyo Rotarians. We especially enjoyed the warmth extended during the opening ceremony day and the dinner. It was quite an honor to share such wonderful cuisine with you. Please thank the many members and spouses involved in planning and hosting the dinner and reception. lobbyi:( Rita and I will always treasure the kind and patient escorts, the friendship, of the fellowship of the Tokyo Club members. You made our visit a very enjoyable experience and we have attached some of the pictures to Washington D.G. RC Gary M. Gallagher Munley Gallagher and I you and the members of

95 Convention delegation consisted of five Our Washington Rotary Club Rotary persons, Susan O'Neal, Gus and Rita Gallagher, plus my wife Ann and me. A11 can agree that we had three primary impressions of our Osaka Convention experience: Efficiency and Organization Japanese have a reputation for excellent organization and efficiency. We were not disappointed. Events ran about as smoothly as humanly possible. Washington is vying for the 2011 Convention. We will do well to follow the exemplary organization of our Japanese hosts. The United Rotary Community of Nations and Cultures The opening ceremony has the traditional presentation of the flags of all the nations and territories which have Rotary Clubs. It was really moving and impressive, particularly before more than 47,000 Rotarians in the Osaka Dome sports arena. Witnessing the presentation of flags, it became evident there is hardly a place on earth without a Rotary Club. Indeed, there are a few tiny principalities which have a Rotary Club, yet are unknown to most people. Still, at the Osaka Convention, these obscure areas had their place in the Rotary limelight, the same as the mightiest nations. No matter where we come from. the

96 awesome Osaka gathering demonstrated we are all united as Rotarians, dedicated to "Service Above Self." Race,gender, nationality, religion, politics, wealth, culture and social class are all irrelevant. Hospitality We will never forget the Tokyo Rotarians' incredible hospitality. We really cherished the experience of marching together with the Tokyo Club delegation into the Osaka Dome at the opening ceremony on Sunday, May 23rd. Later that evening, we had an exquisite Japanese dinner at Kitcho restaurant, again with the Tokyo delegation. The food was outstanding, while its artistic presentation was truly fabulous. In remarks to the gathering on behalf of Washington Rotary, I stated no one can surpass the Tokyo Rotarians in hospitality. However, I also promised that we Washington Rotarians would do our very best to match the Tokyo Rotarians in hospitality when they visit Chicago and Washington for the Centennial Convention festivities. Thanks to Susan O'Neal's initiative at the Convention, we have already made giant strides towards re-paying the Tokyo Rotarians for their wonderful hospitality. Susan began a campaign to raise thousands of US dollars for the Tokyo Club's Cambodian Land Mine Removal program, which has been developed into a Rotary District-wide project.
