22 The Japanese-Language Press in the United States and LARA: The Seattle Hokubei Hochi s Coverage of Relief in Post-War Japan, This article attempts to examine how a Japanese-language newspaper in Seattle, Hokubei Hochi The North American Post, covered Japanese Americans involvement in the relief movement for Japan s post-war reconstruction by LARA Licensed Agencies for Relief in Asia. A qualitative analysis of the newspaper from its first June 5, 1946 issue through the end of 1947 found that it was in full and consistent support for LARA and its activities. The Seattle newspaper encouraged LARA s project in many ways. For example, it repeatedly stressed that the Japanese in Japan had become war refugees and on that ground contended that Japanese Americans were in a far better state. The newspaper, too, regularly published thank-you letters from Japan, which could have reinforced the readers motivation to contribute to LARA s relief movement. Those who were promoting the movement also found the paper useful for publicity and made full use of it. So did Seattle Japanese American leaders who organized a local Japan relief committee. The paper cooperated with these LARA supporters and served consciously as a publicity medium for LARA.
