5 Abstract The Spati-Tempral Effective Rane f Frward Maskin n Test Gratins Takahir Tsun Human beins et a variety f visual infrmatin frm the utside wrld by visual system. Therefre, ur life can be mre cmfrtable if we will use the visual system better. Fr that purpse, it is imprtant t knw hw the human visual system prcesses the visual infrmatin. In this study, we investiated the prcess f luminance sinal that is ne f the mst imprtant as visual infrmatin. Especially, it is imprtant t fiure ut a spati-tempral effective rane between visual stimuli because the knwlede abut them can be applied, fr example, t an aumented reality technly presentin sins prperly n a head munted display(hmd). Therefre, we investiated the spati-tempral effective rane f frward maskin, in which the sensitivity f a test stimulus was reduced by the presentatin f a frward mask stimulus. As a methd, we measured a cntrast sensitivity f the test stimulus under the influence f the frward maskin. Spatial effective rane f frward maskin were studied with chanin a spatial separatin between the mask and test stimuli. Tempral effective rane f frward maskin were als studied by chanin an inter-stimulus interval(isi) between the mask and test stimuli. In additin, we investiated that relatin between maskin effect and stimulus feature by chanin a spatial frequency and an rientatin f the test stimulus. Mrever, we investiated whether there wuld be an intercular transfer f maskin effect with the intercular maskin iii
6 cnditin. The mask and test stimuli were sinusidal ratins mdulated in luminance and vinetted within a Gaussian envelpe. The mask stimulus cnsisted f tw Gabr patches that laterally displaced frm the center f the screen. The spatial separatin between centers f the mask stimuli was, 2.5, 3.5 r 4.5 deree f visual anle. The spatial frequency f the mask stimulus was 4. cpd. The cntrast f the mask stimulus was 8%. A duratin f the mask stimulus was 57 msec. The test stimulus was a sinle statinary Gabr patch that lcated at the center f the screen. The rientatins f the test stimulus were -45,, 45 r 9 deree frm a vertical line. The spatial frequency f the test stimulus was 1.5 r 4. cycles per deree(cpd). A duratin f the test stimulus was 29 msec. The ISI between the mask and test stimuli was 57, 1, 16 r 2 msec. As the results, the cntrast sensitivities fr the test stimuli in all subjects were decreased sinificantly when the inter-stimulus spatial separatin f the mask stimulus was small(less than 3.5 deree) and the ISI was shrt(less than 16 msec). The results shw n sinificant differences in the cntrast sensitivity fr the test stimulus when the inter-stimulus spatial separatin became larer r the ISI became lner. Cnsequently, spatial effective rane f frward maskin was less than 3.5 deree and tempral effective rane f frward maskin was less than 16 msec. The cntrast sensitivity fr the test stimulus was much decreased (sinificantly) when the test stimulus was the vertical-ratin and the spatial frequency f the test stimulus was 4. cpd. These facts indicate that there are rientatin-selectivity and spatial-frequency-selectivity in the frward maskin effect. In additin, maskin effect became weaker but still existed in the intercular maskin cnditin. This intercular transfer f maskin effect indicates that it is related t the hiher brain functin. Our results indicate that when a supplemental infrmatin presents n HMD, it shuld nt verlap spatially and/r temprally n tarets. If they verlapped in the iv
7 presentatin, the feature f supplemental infrmatin shuld be different each ther. In additin, this intercular transfer f maskin effect indicates that even when we use a mncular HMD t present supplemental infrmatin, we have t cnsider the influence f maskin effect. key wrds human interface visual maskin ratin cntrast threshld inhibitin effect intercular transfer v
