Tokyo 東京 Jun.5~Jun.7 Ebara Jinja Tenno-sai or Annual Festival of Ebara Shrine, Shinagawa-ku. Mikoshi (portable shrines) owned by the town parade in the neighborhood of the Shrine from 9 am to 4 pm on the 6th, and from 12 noon to 4 pm on the 7th. The festival is rather small in scale this year. Access : The Keihin-Kyuko Line to Shin-Bamba Sta., and then walk 2 min. 品川区北品川 2 荏原神社 荏原神社天王祭 最寄駅 : 京浜急行新馬場駅より徒歩 2 分 Jun.5~Jun.7 Annual Festival of Shinagawa Shrine, Shinagawa-ku. On the 6th, Oiran-dochu (procession of ladies in top-ranking courtesans' attire in Edo era) starts from Shinagawa-bashi (bridge) at around 6:30 pm, passes on Kyu-Tokaido (old Tokaido Highway), and arrives at Seiseki Koen (park) at around 8:30 pm. On the 7th, Mikoshi (portable shrine) parades in the neighborhood of the Shrine including on Kyu-Tokaido from 8 am to 7:30 pm. Satokagura (local Shinto music & dance) is continually performed from 10 am to 8 pm. Access : The Keihin Kyuko Line to Shin-Bamba Sta. (North Exit), and then walk 1 min. 品川区北品川品川神社聖蹟公園 品川神社大祭 最寄駅 : 京浜急行新馬場駅 ( 北口 ) より徒歩 1 分 Jun.6&Jun.7 Annual Festival of Shirahige Shrine, Sumida-ku. Mikoshi (portable shrines) owned by the town parade around the Shrine from 10 am to 4 pm on the 6th and 7th. Open-air stalls are set up during the festival period. The festival is rather small in scale this year. Access : The Tobu Isezaki Line originating at Asakusa to Higashi-Mukojima Sta., and then walk 8-10 min. 墨田区東向島 3 白髭神社 白髭神社大祭 最寄駅 : 東武伊勢崎線東向島駅より徒歩 8~10 分 Jun.6&Jun.7 Annual Festival of Suga Shrine, Shinjuku-ku. On the 6th, Okagura (Shinto music and dance) from around 10 am to 3 pm, and Wadaiko (drum beating) from around 6 pm to 6:30 pm are dedicated to the Shrine in Kaguraden (Hall). On the 7th, Mikoshi (portable shrines) owned by the town parade in the neighboring area of the Shrine during the daytime. Open-air stalls are set up from around 11 am to around 9 pm on both days. The festival is rather small in scale this year. Access :(1)The Marunouchi Subway Line to Yotsuya -sanchome Sta., and then walk 10 min. (2)The JR Sobu Line to Shinanomachi Sta., and then walk 10 min. 新宿区須賀町 5 須賀神社 須賀神社大祭 最寄駅 : (1) 丸の内線四谷三丁目駅より徒歩 10 分 (2) JR 総武線信濃町駅より徒歩 10 分 Jun.6&Jun.7 Annual Festival of Torigoe Shrine, Taito-ku. All Mikoshi (portable shrines) of the town assemble at the Shrine on the evening of the 6th. On the 7th, Sengan-Mikoshi (portable shrine), weighing about 4 tons and carried by 150 to 200 people, continually parades in the neighborhood of the Shrine from 6:30 am to 9 pm. About 300 open-air stalls are set up on both days. Access :(1)The JR Sobu Line or the Toei Asakusa Subway Line to Asakusabashi Sta., and then walk 5-10 min. 2 Jun.6~Jun.14 Bunkyo Ajisai Matsuri (Hydrangea Festival) at Hakusan Shrine, Bunkyo-ku. About 3,000 hydrangeas will be in full bloom during the festival period. Various events including music concerts of brass and jazz bands are scheduled from around 11 am to 5 pm on Saturdays & Sundays during the festival period. Access : (1)The Toei Mita Subway Line to Hakusan Sta., and then walk 1 min. (2)The Namboku Subway Line to Hon-Komagome Sta., and then walk 3 min. 文京区白山神社 文京あじさいまつり 最寄駅 : (1) 都営三田線白山駅より徒歩 1 分 (2) 南北線本駒込駅より徒歩 3 分 Jun.7~Jun.17 Sanno Matsuri Festival of Hie Shrine, Chiyoda-ku. Kagura-Bayashi (Shinto festival music and dance) is performed from morning till night on the 12th, 14th and 15th. Nodate (open-air tea ceremony) is held from 11 am to 3 pm on the 14th & 15th, and from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm on the 16th. Chigo-Gyoretsu (procession of children in fancy attire) takes place in the precincts from 2 pm on the 14th. The festival is rather small in scale this year. (3)The Chiyoda or Marunouchi Subway Line to Kokkai-Gijidomae Sta. 千代田区永田町 日枝神社 山王まつり 最寄駅 : (1) 銀座線又は南北線溜池山王駅 (2) 銀座線又は丸ノ内線赤坂見附駅 (3) 千代田線又は丸ノ内線国会議事堂前駅 Jun.12~Jun.14 Tsukiji-jishi Matsuri Festival at Namiyoke-Inari Shrine, Chuo-ku. On the 13th, Edo Sato-kagura (local festival music) is continually performed from around 10 am to the evening. On the 14th, a parade of floats; (1) Ojishi (big imaginary male lion head) weighing about 1 ton, (2) Mejishi (big imaginary female lion head) weighing about 700 kg, (3) a pair of Kin-shishi (lions gilded with gold), and (4) five pairs of Shishi-gashira (lions' heads floats) owned by the town carried by thousands of people, starts from Namiyoke-Inari Shrine at around 8:15 am, and marches through the main streets of the Tsukiji area and returns to the Shrine at around 4:30 pm. Access : (1)The Toei Oedo Subway Line to Tsukiji-shijo Sta., and then walk 3-4 min. (2)The Hibiya Subway Line to Tsukiji Sta., and then walk 4 min. 中央区波除稲荷神社 つきじ獅子祭 最寄駅 : (1) 都営大江戸線築地市場駅より徒歩 3~4 分 (2) 日比谷線築地駅より徒歩 4 分 Jun.13&Jun.14 Annual Festival of Sumida Inari Shrine, Sumida-ku. A lighted Manto Mikoshi (portable shrine in the shape of lantern) parades through the neighboring area of the Shrine from around 7 pm to 8 pm on both days. A parade of Chu-Mikoshi (medium-sized portable shrine) starts from the Shrine at around 9 am, going on Kanegafuchi-dori (street) and returns to the Shrine at 3:30 pm on the 14th. This year's festival is rather small in scale. Access :(1)The Keisei Oshiage Line to Yahiro Sta., and then walk 10 min. (2)The Tobu Isezaki Line to Kanegafuchi Sta., and then walk 7 min. 墨田区墨田 4 隅田稲荷神社 隅田稲荷大祭 最寄駅 : (1) 京成押上線八広駅より徒歩 10 分 (2) 東武伊勢崎線鐘ヶ淵駅より徒歩 7 分 Jun.19~Jun.21 Heiwajima Antique Fair is held at Tokyo Ryutsu Center, Ota-ku, from 10 am to 5 pm. A similar fair is scheduled for Sep. (18-20) and Dec. (18-20) this year. Access : The Tokyo Monorail Line originating at Hamamatsucho Sta. to Ryutsu Center Sta. 大田区平和島 東京流通センター 平和島骨董まつり 最寄駅 : 浜松町駅より東京モノレール流通センター駅 Jun.23&Jun.24 Hozuki Ichi (Ground Cherry Fair) is held in the precincts of Atago Shrine, Minato-ku, from around 9 am to 8 pm on both days. Access :(1)The Hibiya Subway Line to Kamiyacho Sta., and then walk 6 min. (2)The Toei Mita Subway Line to Onarimon Sta., and then walk 6 min. (3)The Ginza Subway Line to Toranomon Sta., and then walk 10 min. 港区愛宕神社 千日詣り ( ほおずき市 ) 最寄駅 : (1) 日比谷線神谷町駅より徒歩 6 分 (2) 都営三田線御成門駅より徒歩 6 分 (3) 銀座線虎ノ門駅より徒歩 10 分 Jun.27&Jun.28 Ofuji-san-no-Ueki Ichi (Potted Plant Fair) on the streets in the neighborhood of Sengen Shrine, Asakusa, Taito-ku, is held from around 12 noon to around 10 pm on both days. The fair is one of the biggest potted plant fairs in Tokyo. 3 Jun.27&Jun.28 Gujo Odori in Aoyama featuring Gujo Odori (folk dance designated as an Intangible Cultural Property, originating in Gujo-Hachiman, Gifu pref.) is held at Baisoin Temple in Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku, from 5 pm to around 8:30 pm on both days. Local specialties of the Gujo-Hachiman area are put on sale during the period. Access : The Ginza Subway Line to Gaien-mae Sta., and then walk 1 min. 港区南青山 2 梅窓院 郡上おどりイン青山 最寄駅 : 銀座線外苑前駅より徒歩 1 分 Jun.30&Jul.1 Torigoe Chinowa-kuguri or a traditional ceremony to pray for good health and longevity takes place at Torigoe Shrine, Taito-ku, from 8 pm to 8:30 pm on June 30th. Suijosai-Katashiro-nagashi or a Shinto ritual features a purification ceremony held on July 1st. Gozabune boat carrying Katashiro (paper cut in the shape of dolls), escorted by dozens of boats, departs from Yanagibashi Bridge close to JR Asakusabashi Sta. at 10 am and goes down the Sumida River as far as Tokyo Bay. Access : (1)The Toei Asakusa or Oedo Subway Line to Kuramae Sta., and then walk 5 min. to Torigoe Shrine. (2)The JR Sobu Line or the Asakusa Subway Line to Asakusabashi Sta., and then walk 1 min. to Yanagibashi Bridge. 台東区鳥越 2-4 鳥越神社 茅の輪くぐり / 水上祭形代流し 最寄駅 : (1) 鳥越神社へは 地下鉄都営浅草線又は都営大江戸線蔵前駅より徒歩 5 分 (2) 柳橋へは JR 総武線又は都営浅草線浅草橋駅より徒歩 1 分 A-1. Tokyo Iris Garden Jun.1~Jun.30 Hana-Shobu (Irises) at Meiji Shrine, Shibuya-ku. The garden is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm (to 6 pm on Sat. & Sun.) during the period. Admission: \500. Irises are usually in full bloom in the middle of June. Access : (1)The JR Yamanote Line to Harajuku Sta. (2)The Chiyoda Subway Line to Meiji-Jingumae Sta. 渋谷区明治神宮御苑 花菖蒲 最寄駅 : (1) JR 山手線原宿駅 (2) 千代田線明治神宮前駅 Jun.5~Jun.25 Shobu Matsuri (Iris Festival) at Horikiri Shobuen Garden, Katsushika-ku. The garden is open daily from 8 am to 6 pm during the period. Various events are scheduled as follows; (1) a demonstration of Wadaiko (Japanese drum beating) from 10 am to 11 am, & from 3:30 pm to 4 pm, (2) Koto (Japanese musical instrument with 13 strings) performance from 12 noon to 2 pm, (3) Nodate (open-air tea ceremony) from 10 am to 4 pm, (1) (2) (3) all on the 7th, (4) Wadaiko from 11:30 am & 12:30 pm on the 14th, and (5) Shamisen (three-stringed Japanese banjo) performance from 1:30 pm to 2:10 pm on the 21st. Admission is free. Access : The Keisei Line originating at Keisei-Ueno Sta. to Horikiri-Shobuen Sta., and then walk 10 min. 葛飾区堀切 2 堀切菖蒲園 菖蒲祭 最寄駅 : 京成線堀切菖蒲園駅より徒歩 10 分 Jun.5~Jun.25 Shobu Matsuri (Iris Festival) at Mizumoto Koen Park, Katsushika-ku. The garden is open daily from dawn to dusk. Wadaiko (Japanese drum beating) and a popular song show are held on the 7th, 14th and 21st. Some other events including a tea ceremony are scheduled on Sat. and Sun. during the festival period. (Hours are still to be arranged.) Admission is free. Access : The JR Joban Line or the Keisei Kanamachi Line to Kanamachi Sta. (South Exit). From there, min. by bus to Mizumoto Koen Bus Stop, and then walk 7 min. 葛飾区水元公園 2 水元公園 菖蒲祭 最寄駅 : 常磐線又は京成金町線金町駅南口よりバスで水元公園下車後 徒歩 7 分 Jun.13~Jun.22 Hana-Shobu-ten (Iris Flower Exhibition) at Yasukuni Shrine, Chiyoda-ku. Potted irises can be enjoyed in the precincts of the Shrine, daily from 10 am to 7 pm (from 6 am to 5 pm on the 22nd) during the period. Admission is free. 4 B. KANTO 関東 May.23~Jun.28 Itako Ayame Matsuri or Iris Flower Festival at Maekawa Iris Garden, Itako, Ibaraki Pref. The iris flowers from various parts of Japan are exhibited during the festival period. Admission is free. Yomeiri-fune (demonstration of escorting a bride by boat) on the river leaves the pier in the garden at around 11 am, 2 pm and 8 pm every Saturday, and at 11 am and 2 pm every Sunday, both during the period. Itako-Bayashi (festival music) from 1 pm to 2 pm, and Ayame-Odori (local Japanese dance) from 1:15 pm to 1:45 pm are performed every Sunday during the period. When it rains, the schedule of Yomeiri-fune and dances are subject to change. Access : The JR Kashima Line to Itako Sta., and then walk 3 min. to the garden. 茨城県潮来市前川あやめ園 潮来あやめ祭 最寄駅 : あやめ園へは JR 鹿島線潮来駅より徒歩 3 分 May.27~Jun.2 Kaiko Kinen Bazaar in Yokohama Koen (park) near Yokohama Stadium, Yokohama, Kanagawa Pref. A big bazaar is held from 10 am to 7 pm daily during the event period. Over 200 open-air stalls are set up selling potted plants, clothes, toys and the like. Access : The JR Negishi Line from Yokohama Sta. (or the JR Keihin Tohoku Line from Tokyo Sta.) to Kannai Sta. (South Exit), and then walk 3 min. 神奈川県横浜市横浜公園 ( 横浜スタジアム周辺 ) 開港記念バザー 最寄駅 : 横浜駅よりJR 根岸線 ( 東京からはJR 京浜東北線が乗り入れ ) 関内駅 ( 南口 ) より徒歩 3 分 Jun.1&Jun.2 Yokohama Kaiko-sai Festival mainly in the Minato-Mirai 21 area, Yokohama, Kanagawa Pref. This year falls on the 150th anniversary since the opening of the Yokohama port. Various kinds of events are scheduled at dozens of festival sites from around 10 am to 9 pm on both days. A fireworks display is held over Rinko Park from about 8:20 pm to 8:50 pm on the 2nd. Access : (1)The JR Negishi Line from Yokohama Sta. or the JR Keihin Tohoku Line from Tokyo Sta. to Sakuragicho Sta. HOKKAIDO & TOHOKU 北海道 東北 Jun.13 Chagu-chagu Umakko (Horse Festival) at Sozen Shrine, Takizawa-mura, Iwate-gun, Iwate Pref. About a hundred of colorfully decorated horses are led to Sozen Shrine by their proud owners, who pray for long life of their horses. They gather at the Shrine around 8:30 am and start parading at 9:30 am, passing by Morioka Sta. at 12:40 pm, and then arrive at Hachimangu Shrine at 1:55 pm. Access : (1)The JR Tohoku Shinkansen Line to Morioka Sta., and then 20 min. by taxi to Sozen Shrine. (2)Free shuttle buses on the day are available every 10 min. from JR Morioka Sta. to Sozen Shrine (6:30 am - 8:25 am), and for returning from Sozen Shrine to Morioka Sta. (9:50 am - 11:05 am). (3)10 min. by bus (Iwate-ken kotsu) from Morioka Sta. to Hachimangu Shrine. 岩手県岩手郡滝沢村蒼前神社八幡宮 チャグチャグ馬コ 最寄駅 : (1)JR 東北新幹線盛岡駅より蒼前神社へは タクシーで約 20 分 (2) 当日は盛岡駅と蒼前神社の間を無料シャトルバスが10 分間隔で運行 JR 盛岡駅発 (6:30 am - 8:25 am) 蒼前神社発 (9:50 am - 11:05 am) (3) 盛岡駅より岩手県交通バスで10 分 八幡宮前下車 Jun.14~Jun.16 Sapporo Matsuri or Annual Festival of Hokkaido Jingu Shrine, Sapporo, Hokkaido. The highlight of the festival comes on the 16th when four Mikoshi (portable shrines) and eight beautifully bedecked floats proceed from the Shrine to Odori Koen (park) in the city's busiest part from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Kagura (Shinto music and dance) is played from 3 pm to 4 pm on the 14th. On the 15th, Noh (classical masked drama) from 11:20 am to 12:50 pm, Japanese martial arts from 1 pm to 2:40 pm, Kagura from 2:50 pm to 4:50 pm, Gagaku (court music & dance) from 5 pm to 6 pm, Ohayashi (festival music) from 6 pm to 6:30 pm, and Ningyo-Joruri (puppet show) from 6:30 pm to 7 pm are scheduled to be demonstrated, all in front of Honden (main hall). Access : The Tozai Subway Line to Maruyama Koen Sta., and then walk 15 min to the Shrine. 北海道札幌市北海道神宮 札幌まつり ( 北海道神宮例祭 ) 最寄駅 : 北海道神宮へは 地下鉄東西線円山公園駅より徒歩 15 分 D. CHUBU 中部 Jun.2&Jun.3 Dontsuku Matsuri Festival is held at Inatori Onsen, Higashi-Izucho, Kamo-gun, Shizuoka Pref. On both days, various events are scheduled; Mikoshi (portable shrines) parading through the town from 7:10 pm to 8:40 pm, Taiko (Japanese drum beating) from 8:40 pm to 9 pm, and a fireworks display from 9:05 pm to 9:20 pm over Ikejiri Kaigan (seashore). 6 Jun.4~Jun.8 Otako-gassen or kite-fighting event is held on the riverbed of the Nakanokuchi River, Shirone, Niigata Pref., featuring thirteen huge kites flown by groups of citizens from 1 pm to 6 pm (to 5:30 pm on the 8th) during the event period. Access : (1)50 min. by bus bound for Katahigashi-eigyosho (via Shirone) from Niigata Kotsu Bus Terminal in front of JR Niigata Sta., and then get off at Noto Bus Stop (get off at Shirone Sho-mae Bus Stop on the 6th and 7th). (2)30 min. by taxi from Tsubame-sanjo Sta. on the JR Joetsu Shinkansen Line. 新潟県新潟市白根中ノ口川岸 大凧合戦 最寄駅 : (1)JR 新潟駅前の新潟交通バスターミナルより 潟東営業所行 ( 白根経由 ) のバスで50 分 能登バス停下車 (6 日と 7 日は 白根小前バス停下車 ) (2)JR 上越新幹線燕三条駅からタクシーで30 分 Jun.5 Atsuta Matsuri or Annual Festival of Atsuta Jingu Shrine known as Shobu-sai, Nagoya, Aichi Pref., features Kyudo (Japanese-style archery) from 9 am, Kendo (Japanese-style fencing) from 10 am, Kencha (tea-offering ceremony) held from 10 am to 11 am, Kenka (the ritual of dedicating flower arrangement) by Sogetsu school at Kitoden (hall) from 2 pm to 3 pm, Kagura (Shinto music and dance) from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, Taiko (Japanese drum beating) from 6 pm to 6:30 pm, and Kento Makiwara (big altars lighted with 365 lanterns) from 6 pm to 9 pm, all in the precincts of the Shrine. A fireworks display is scheduled from 7:50 pm to 9 pm at Jingu Koen (park). When it rains, the fireworks display will be postponed until the 6th. Access : The Meitetsu Nagoya Line to Jingu-mae Sta. 愛知県名古屋市熱田神宮 熱田まつり ( 尚武祭 ) 熱田神宮例祭 最寄駅 : 名鉄名古屋線神宮前駅 Jun.5~Jun.7 Hyakumangoku Matsuri Festival, Kanazawa, Ishikawa Pref., features Hyakumangoku Parade of warriors, brass bands and a dragon dance, starting from Tsuzumi-mon in front of Kanazawa Sta. to Kanazawa Castle Koen (park) from 2 pm to 6:10 pm on the 6th. Other events are as follows: Kaga Yuzen Toro-nagashi (floating of lighted lanterns made of silk) set adrift on the Asano River from 7 pm to 9 pm on the 5th, Hyakumangoku Odori-nagashi (a dancing parade of dancers in Yukata garment) along the street (Route No.157) between Oyama Shrine and Katamachi Kosaten (intersection) from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm on the 6th, a performance of local Japanese folk music & dances at Kanazawa Kageki-za (theater) from 10 am to 4 pm, and Takigi Noh (open-air torchlight Noh performance) at Kanazawa Castle Koen from 6:30 pm to 9 pm, both on the 7th. Access : 1) The JR Hokuriku Honsen Line to Kanazawa Sta., and then 10 min. & up by bus to Korinbo Bus Stop. 2) 5 min. & up by bus from Kanazawa Sta. to Hashibacho Bus Stop for the Asano River.
