The icons were designed to be easily understood at a glance, in anticipation of an influx of foreign tourists toward the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. The icons denote five types of disaster: floods, debris flows, tsunami, landslides, and large fires. The flood icon expresses a rise in water level with a double wavy line, and that for debris flow shows a drawing depicting earth and sand flowing down a river. By displaying these icons in combination with icons that symbolize evacuation centers and others, a single emergency sign can convey what types of disaster may occur and where to flee. Society Busta Shinjuku Opens as Japan s Largest Highway Bus Terminal Japan s largest highway bus terminal called Busta Shinjuku (Shibuya ward, Tokyo) opened on April 4 = photo. The terminal sprawls across a 1.47-hectare area adjacent to JR Shinjuku Station and consolidates all 19 highway bus stations that had been dispersed in the vicinity. It is used by as many as 118 bus companies that operate routes to 39 prefectures. With up to 1,625 arrivals and departures per day during peak seasons, Busta Shinjuku boasts the largest scale of all bus terminals in Japan. Taxi stands are also located in the terminal. 3 Hokkaido Shinkansen Opens: All Aboard for a Journey through the Japanese Archipelago! The Hokkaido Shinkansen officially debuted on March 26 (along the kilometer segment between Shin-Aomori and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto) as the first shinkansen to connect Hokkaido and Honshu, the main island of Japan. Combined with a through-service with the Tohoku Shinkansen, the new line connects Tokyo and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in as little as 4 hours and 2 minutes, reducing conventional travel time as much as 60 to 90 minutes. For the first time in 52 years since the Tokaido Shinkansen was introduced in 1964, the 2,150+ kilometers from Hokkaido to Kyushu have been connected by shinkansen. At 6:35 a.m., Hayabusa No. 10, the first train bound for Tokyo, departed from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station in Hokuto City, Hokkaido upon the stationmaster s departure signal. Carrying railway fans and tourists, the train rolled through the morning sun with local residents cheering loudly and waving auspicious Tairyoki boat flags along the route. Tomoki Joichi, 9, a third-grader from Inagi City, Tokyo, rode Hayate No. 91, the first train from the Aomori side to Hokkaido, with his family. I can t believe we re traveling under the sea, he said in amazement as he traced the train s route through the Seikan Tunnel on a map. While the train can travel at speeds of up to 260 km/h, maximum speed along the 82-kilometer segment that includes the Seikan Tunnel and is also shared with freight trains is limited to 140 km/h. From Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, the major tourist gateway of Hakodate Station (Hakodate City) can be reached in approximately 15 minutes. There are numerous beautiful beaches, rivers, and lakes throughout Japan, which attract many leisure visitors every year. In such places, however, lack of precaution and sufficient planning could turn an enjoyable time into an irreversible tragedy. In fiscal 2014, five technical intern trainees lost their lives in water accidents. We urge you to heed the following precautions to create wonderful memories of an accident-free summer. To prevent water accidents: Do not enter the water at a beach alone. Never go into the water for a swim after drinking alcohol, or when you lack sleep or are not feeling well. At beaches, the water could deepen suddenly, the tide might be strong, or water bikes may have the right-of-way. Ask your company or local residents in advance whether the beach you plan to go to is suitable for swimming. Do not swim in rivers, as the current may be strong and the water may deepen suddenly and can be dangerous. Fully warm up before going into the water. Be sure to obey warnings and precautions that are issued by lifeguards. Do not touch organisms in the water, as they may be poisonous. Be attentive to weather conditions and the laws of nature (the movement of tides and currents, waves, and the flow of water toward the drain outlet in swimming pools). Also heed the following in daily life. Do not go to check on a beach or river when a typhoon is approaching or when it is raining heavily. Be aware that areas downstream of a river could flood on the day after a rainstorm. If it begins to thunder, take shelter inside a building or car as much as possible. Summer also poses the risk of heat stroke. Heat stroke occurs when the body s salt (sodium, etc.) and water balance is disrupted and regulatory functions are impaired in high-temperature and high-humidity environments. Heat stroke causes dizziness, spasms, nausea, and/or impaired consciousness, and can even be fatal in severe cases. By the time you experience such symptoms, it might be too late to prevent heat stroke. Therefore, take early action against heat stroke, such as by replenishing your body with water and salt, taking frequent breaks in the shade to cool down, and refrain from engaging in vigorous activities under the hot sun. Should you come down with heat stroke, lower your body temperature and, if possible, take in plenty of water and salt. Continuing from the previous issue, let s think about food once again in this issue. Each country and region has its own food culture, and knowing the uniqueness of each food culture is extremely helpful in gaining an understanding of that country or region. We often hear stories of how technical intern trainees have deepened interactions with Japanese people at work and in their community by preparing and serving their native dishes. This is precisely owing to the power of food. In addition, if you expose yourself to Japan s food culture, you will probably acquire hints for understanding Japanese customs and the people, and gain more breadth to appreciate life in Japan. Japanese food, or washoku, was included in UNESCO s List of Intangible World Heritage in As you are in Japan, make the most of your stay by enjoying washoku! There is nothing difficult about this. You could, for example, cook an ordinary stir-fried dish using soy sauce or miso, which are representative seasonings in Japan made by fermenting soy beans. You might also want to make tsukemono, or vegetables pickled in salt or soy sauce. Tsukemono variations exist throughout Japan as regional specialties, but you could start with something simple to go along with white rice. One of the most common tsukemono is takuwan (pickled daikon radish). An essay written about takuwan is introduced below, expressing the power of food. I put the thin and thick slices of takuwan in two different dishes and placed the dishes on the dining table. In the end, the thick slices of takuwan were mostly all gone, but the thin slices remained, except for one slice that was eaten by someone. Why?
