1 PREFACE During the last decade new types of researches appeared in the field of fossil microplankton (dinoflagellate cysts and acritarchs). One is the observation of life cycle of meroplanktonic dinoflagellates, which contributed to the solution of the 'hystrichosphere problem'. The other is concerning Holocene dinoflagellate cyst distribution and palynological investigation on deep-sea core samples. They brought valuable information into the field of biogeography and biostratigraphy respectively. Likewise the investigation of acritarchs proved their paleontological significance with respect to the origin of life and Paleozoic biostratigraphy. As a result the publication dealing with the fossil group remarkably increased in number during the period. In spite of the recent progress mentioned above, their paleontological significance is less appreciated in Japan, since no extensive research was performed until lately. The present paper is published with a view to introducing the micropaleontology of the fossil group to the domestic paleontologists. It contains a histrical review of the 'hystrichosphere problem', as well as general statements of planktonic dinoflagellates, the morphology of the fossils, their distribution in Holocene sediments, and the stratigraphic significance. In addition, a bibliography is furnished as an appendix. Most of the titles contained in the bibliography are checked by the original authors. We thank their cooperation. We also thank Drs. Nobuo Ikebe, Faculty of Science, Osaka City University, and Kojiro Nakaseko, College of General Education, Osaka University, for providing the opportunity to publish the present paper. K. H. K. M.
