Robert Lee If you have ever seen a Marx Brothers film then you will know that Groucho sings Hello I must be going in Animal Crackers, made in It s a lovely piece of mayhem, full of wit and double plays of meaning. I hope colleagues and students alike will appreciate why I use it to make my own farewell to Nichidai and the English Department. After 14 years I arrived at Sakura Josui in 1997 the surrealism that is called retirement beckons. I have had a terrific time in Japan and, obviously, it is a sad curtain that the March earthquake-andtsunami tragedy and then the Fukushima disaster should happen just as I am about to return to Europe. None of that, even so, dims my great affection for Japanese life, the privilege of spending time in the Chrysanthemum Kingdom. So this, first, as a major thank-you, a big arigato, to my colleagues, and students present and past, undergraduate and postgraduate, for giving me the opportunity to spend over a decade in your company. Teaching, studying, writing about, literature is a unique pleasure, a wonderful provocation to the mind and imagination. That is what it has been all my life, of late at Nichidai, during various Visiting Professorships in the USA and elsewhere, and throughout the more than 25 years I taught at the University of Kent with which the department has an annual arrangement as to summer schools. I owe many debts. And it would be invidious to single out any one in particular. But I cannot not mention the generous work that Hara-sensei and Noro-sensei, with help from Maejima-san, have done in translating one of my books into Japanese Multicultural American Literature: Comparative Black, Native, Latino/a and Asian American Fictions which, to my great pleasure, won the American Book Award for Let me add that two recent literary-creative books are meant to pay specific tribute to life and times in Tokyo: Japan Textures: Sight and Word 2007, with Mark Gresham, and Tokyo Commute: Japanese Customs and Way of Life Viewed from the Odakyu Line (2011). Each is meant to explore something of what it is to see, hear, live Japan when you come from outside the country. Teaching at Nichidai has given me the perfect platform. Caraker Although this proverb has recently implied the continuation of a negative family characteristic, I prefer to interpret it as carrying on the best that our parents can offer us. My father would have been pleasantly surprised to know that I had left the United States to settle in Japan, as he was born in South Africa, and settled in the US to practice real estate, but not before 11

12 serving in the US Navy in World War 2, and marrying and putting down (temporary) roots in Japan. If I got my wanderlust from my father, then my mother instilled in me a knack for language. A writer and former English teacher, she demanded linguistic accuracy at all times; there was no room for mistakes. Both my parents were springboards to where I am now. Even though the road to Nihon University English teacher took many unexpected detours early on, all my experiences contributed to this point, and my parents influence remained consistent. Instead of attempting to keep me under their wing when I nervously told them I wanted to spend a year abroad in Spain as a college undergraduate, they encouraged me to go without hesitation. Interim jobs in my twenties as a bartender, art dealer, and real estate salesman created experiences that I draw on today as a classroom teacher. When I decided to go to graduate school and specialize in applied linguistics, I knew that this decision would put me once again on an international path. My first experiences as a teacher at a language institute in California, exposed me to nationalities from all over the world, including Japanese. I was mainly teaching writing then, and I became intrigued by multicultural rhetorical modes I came across in my classrooms. It was especially challenging to get my Japanese students to express themselves in a comprehensive way, so my interest in Japan, already piqued by my father, evolved further. Of course, the fact that my girlfriend at the time was Japanese was influential as well. I arrived in Japan almost 20 years ago, and immediately found myself employed by a medical university. Although there was no question that my medical students and hospital physicians were intelligent, and had several years of formal English study under their belts, I was surprised by their lack of communication skill. I knew that in order to advance through the medical hierarchy, proficiency in both spoken and written communication would be indispensible. Therefore, that became my focus for the next several years: instilling confidence and building oral fluency in my undergraduates, advancing the quality of medical English manuscripts written by hospital staff, and introducing modern oral presentation techniques to a medical culture deeply steeped in traditional practices. I found success in building motivation in my students through teaching content-based English, or English for Medical Purposes (EMP), and I carried on my content-based teaching philosophy to the field of rehabilitation science at Health Science University. I owe a lot to both my father s worldly knowledge and my mother s respect for language. I hope that my background in applied linguistics and experience teaching students from various disciplines will be valuable to the student body at Nihon University, and that I can positively affect language learning and teaching in Japan Charlotte Brontë 12
