14 Theoretical Perspectives of the Boundaries of the Multinational Firm Atsuo Takenaka This paper reviews and discusses the theoretical perspectives of the boundaries of the multinational firm. In organization theory, the study of the boundaries of the firm has been performed based on various theories, such as transaction cost theory, resource-based theory and knowledge-based theory. These theories have been also applied in the study of the determination of the boundaries of the multinational firm. In particular, there are two major theoretical perspectives in the study of the issue: transaction cost/internalization theory and knowledge-based theory of the multinational firm. Each of these perspectives vary in their hypotheses concerning the major factor determining the boundaries of the multinational firm, and can provide critical insights into the analysis of the issue.
