The name - L Ecole No 41, French for the school located in district number 41, was chosen to salute the pioneering viticultural efforts of the French-Canadians who settled the area. L Ecole is one of the most recognized and acclaimed wineries in Washington State, having been honored by Wine & Spirits Magazine as Winery of the Year for 13 consecutive years; and in 2014 winning the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards International Trophy for Best in Show, Red Bordeaux Varietals over 15 for their 2011 Ferguson Vineyard bottling. Domaine Serene s farming practices are designed to produce very low crop levels to ensure concentrated flavors - the average yield is only 1.7 tons per acre across all varietals. All of Domaine Serene s grapes are handpicked and hand-sorted. The various small lots from each vineyard are kept separate in small open-top fermentors and aged in French cooperage selectively sourced from several French forests. There is minimal intervention and only gentle gravity flow movement of wine from beginning to end. Pinot Noir is in barrel about months, is not fined or filtered, and is racked only at bottling. Owners Thomas Bertrand and Caroline Jones (vineyard manager and winemaker respectively) manage their property biodynamically with minimal intervention and no chemical additives to create low-yield wines that reflect the terroir from which they come. The vineyard consists mainly of old vines, the oldest parcel being planted in Never irrigated, the vines are encouraged to grow deep into the soil to seek the water and minerals they require, resulting in vines that are drought-resistant and flourish in the long, hot, dry summers of southern France. Biodynamic farming principles also support a symbiotic relationship between the above and below ground environments, with a population of insects, wild plants and trees. All wines are fermented with the native yeasts that thrive in this natural ecosystem, delivering to your glass the wild aromas unique to this special place. In the winery, grapes are crushed and fermented without destemming, enhancing the complexity, structure and ageing potential of the wine. Pump-overs are minimal to avoid too much extraction or mechanical intervention, keeping the focus on finesse.
