2 Lesson 6 Grammar notes 1 o prefix to show respect o is attached to words connected to the listener or the person being referred to to show respect e.g., onamae name. o is also attached to various other words when the speaker is speaking politely e.g., ohisashiburi a long time, ogenki well. There are some words that are usually used with o without meaning respect or politeness e.g., ocha tea, okane money. 2 moo V mashitai have already had moo means 'already' and is used with V mashita. In this case, V mashita means that the action has been finished. The answer to the question ' Moo V mashita ka' is ' Hai, moo V mashita' or ' Iie, mada desu.' Moo hiru-gohan o tabemashita ka. Hai, mootabemashita. Iie, mada desu. Have you already had lunch? Yes, I have. No, not yet. 3 V masen kawon't you? When you want to invite someone to do something, this expression is used. Issho ni Kobe e ikimasen ka. Ee, ii desu ne. Won't you come to Kobe with us? That's a nice idea. 57
3 Dialogue 2. Mr. Schmidt and Ms. Sachiyo Suzuki talk while looking at a new model in TCS. Kono shin-seehin wa ii desu ne. Watashi wa kore ga suki desu. Watashi wakono shiroi no ga hoshii desu. Ii dezain desu ne. Mr. Schmidt This new model is nice. Ms. Suzuki I like this one. I want to get this white one. Mr. Schmidt It has a good design. 3. Ms. Suzuki invites Mr. Schmidt to a soccer match next Sunday. Schmidt-san, kondo no nichi-yoobi jikan ga arimasu ka. Ee, nani ka. Watashi wa Sato-san ya Ryan-san to Sakkaa no shiai o mi ni ikimasu. 4 Lesson 6 Grammar notes 4 N ga suki desui like Such adjectives as ' suki desu,' ' kirai desu' and ' joozu desu' require objects, and these are marked with ga. The adjectives whose objects are marked with ga are those kinds that describe preference, ability and the like. Watashi wa Nihon-ryoori ga suki desu. I like Japanese food. 5 N ga hoshii desui want This sentence pattern is used to express the speaker's desire to possess or have something. It can also be used to ask what the listener wants. The object is marked with the particle ga. hoshii is an i-adjective. Watashi wa sore ga hoshii desu. I want that one. 6 V masu-form tai desui want to V 1V masu-form The form of a verb when it is used with masu is called the V masu-form. In the word iki-masu, iki is the V masu-form. 2V masu-form tai desu This expresses the speaker's desire to do something. It is also used to ask what the listener wants to do. Watashi wa Kyoto e ikitai desu. I want to go to Kyoto. Nani o tabetai desu ka. Watashi watenpura o tabetai desu. What do you want to eat? I want to eat tempura. Nihon-ryooriJapanese food 59
