3 EXERCISE 1: VOCABULARY( 単語 フレーズ ) 1 - A 1 - B Objective : To introduce words that will be used in the lesson. Required Time : 2-3 minutes Introduce vocabulary. Tutor should read the vocabulary frst before the student. Emphasize sounds of words for the students to recognize the sounds. Correct student's pronunciation errors. Use video feature of Skype to emphasize how to pronounce words Do not give long explanations. EXERCISE 1 VOCABULARY On this page we will learn more words together. Are you ready? Let s start with 1-A, dictionary. Please say dictionary. A dictionary is where you find the meaning of words. 1 - C "dictionary" 1 - D "translate" Let s go to 1-B, translate. Please say, translate. To translate means to say in another language. Let s go to 1-C word. Please say, word. A word is a group of sounds that has meaning. Now let s go to 1-D, expression. Please say, expression. An expression is a word or a group of words that has meaning. After reading all the vocabulary items, say - Do you understand? Wakarimashita ka? - Do you have any questions? 4 EXERCISE 2: LET'S PRACTICE!( 練習 ) 2 - A A: Mom, what does dictionary mean? B: A dictionary is a book where you can find meanings of words. A: Oh, that s interesting! A: What does good afternoon mean? B: Good afternoon is an expression used to greet someone between noon and 6 PM. A: こんにちは ニック ちょっと聞いてもいい? B: マイク どうしたの? A: Good afternoon って 何て意味? B: Good afternoon は お昼から午後 6 時まで使うあいさつだよ Objective : To provide reading/pronunciation practice for the student. Required Time : 3-5 minutes Practice on reading dialogs. Tutor should read the dialogs frst so that the student will hear how to pronounce the words. Assign roles. (e.g. Tutor will read A and student will read B.) Exchange roles with the student if student reads fast. Correct student's pronunciation errors. Do not exchange roles with the student if the student is having a diffcult time reading the dialogs. EXERCISE 2 LET'S PRACTICE! In this exercise we will read the dialogs together. Kaiwa o yomimashou. Start by reading the dialog per sentence. - Let s start with dialog 2-A. Please repeat after me. Kaiwa 2 no A o Kurikaeshitekudasai. Then let your student read A while you read B. - Now you will read A and I will read B. Anata wa A o yonde kudasai, Watashi wa B o yomimasu. Continue with 2-B. Start by reading the dialog per sentence. - Let s read dialog 2-B. Please repeat after me. Kaiwa 2 no B o Kurikaeshitekudasai. Then let your student read B while you read A. - I will read A and you will read B. Watashi wa A o yomimasu, anata wa B o yonde kudasai. - Good job! - Let s go to page 5. Go peeji ni ikimashou. 5 EXERCISE 3: LET S DISCUSS!( 表現 ) 3 - A: What does mean? ( の意味は何ですか?) We use this expression when we DO NOT UNDERSTAND a WORD or EXPRESSION. ( 言葉や表現を知らない時 この表現が使えます ) 3 - B: We can also say...( 他にも 次のように言えます ) A:What is the meaning of this word/expression?( この言葉 / 表現の意味は何ですか?) B:Can you please explain this word/expression?( この言葉 / 表現の意味は何ですか?) * You can also say Can I ask you something? to get the attention of the speaker. ( 相手の注意をひくために Can I ask you something? と言ってみましょう ) 3 - C: How should I answer it?( どう答えるのでしょうか?) You can say ( 次のように言えます ) "It means ( を意味します ) "The meaning of that word/expression is ( この言葉 / 表現の意味は ) Objective :To provide explanation of words and expressions used in the lesson. Required Time : 3-5 minutes Introduce discussion exercise. Read the explanation to the student. Ask follow up question (i.e. Do you understand?) Let the student read the examples given in the lesson. Do not give long explanations to the student since this might confuse or overwhelm the student. EXERCISE 3 LET'S DISCUSS! - Today s expression is What does mean?. (Read the definition provided) - We can also say (Read the other expressions provided) - Do you understand? Wakarimashita ka? - Very Good! B: Good evening is an expression used to greet someone between 6 PM and midnight. A: I see. What do I say before 6 PM? B: Before 6 PM, you can say good afternoon. A: Okay. EXERCISE 4 LET'S USE IT! Now, let s try to use what we have learned in the discussion. Are you ready? Let's read the dialog together. Kaiwa o yomimashou. Start by letting your student read A while you read B. - I will read A and you will read B. Watashi wa A o yomimasu. Anata wa B o yonde kudasai. - That s good! Yokatta desu! Switch roles by letting your student read B while you read A. - Now I will read B and you will read A. Anata wa A o yonde kudasai. Watashi wa B o yomimasu. - Are you ready? Let s start. OK desu ka? 7 EXERCISE 5: LET S REVIEW!( 復習 ) 5 - A 5 - B 5 - C Objective : To repeat the expressions and concepts introduced in the frst part of the lesson. Required Time : 3-5 minutes Review the lesson. Use the explanation given in the discussion part of the lesson. Correct student's pronunciation errors. Do not give long explanations. Do not use other explanations aside from that given on the previous page. EXERCISE 5 LET'S REVIEW!
