Explore the Language Education Methods in Taiwan National New Immigrants Torch Program : Some Analysis of New Immigrants Mother Language and Life Learning Materials Wan-Chien Huang As the number of international marriage has increased, the number of new Taiwanese children attending school is climbing. In 2012, there were more than 200,000 new Taiwanese gradeschool and middle-school students. The Taiwanese government has observed the time for a multi -cultural society to come. The government has actively implemented policies and programs to help new immigrants integrate into the society. The National New Immigrants Torch Program was one of the famous projects, which was school-based. The intention of the program was to narrow the gap between the new immigrants and the society. The program offered a course focusing on the heritage of the immigrants mother languages. The government has also published a set of textbook named New Immigrants Mother Language & Life Learning Materials. However, it was hardly used in the course. The main purposes of this study are to analyze the design of the material, to explore its strengths and weaknesses, to see if it is suitable for children to learn new languages, and to give consideration to the reasons why it did not win the teachers favor.
