One example is how music is covered (i.e., new versions created) between Japan and China. Now, it is instantly covered in Chinese, thanks mainly to the development of the Internet. Moreover, in recent years, Japanese covers of popular Chinese music have also begun to appear. The hitherto one-way flow of popular culture has become two-way. This is good news: it has enabled people in both countries to appreciate each other s music with no time lag. A new trend was observed recently at the annual Japan Youth Chinese Language Karaoke Contest (started in 2007) and the Western Japan Chinese Language Singing Contest (started in 2010). Whereas participants used to sing originally Japanese songs covered in Chinese, they have come to choose contemporary Chinese songs popular with Chinese youth. Young Japanese are now singing songs that their Chinese contemporaries do. In an age when information is shared globally and Chinese songs are everywhere, it is not rare in Japan to witness someone volunteering a song in Chinese as a matter of course. This paper examines the history of the songs covered in Japan and China, explores the use of songs in Chinese language study, and compares textbooks available in Japan and China that make use of such songs.
