Abstract Proposal of an Algorithm of Image Extraction and Research on Improvement of a Man-machine Interface of Food Intake Measuring System Up to now, food intakes in hospitals are calculated manually depending on dieticians measuring by check with eyes and comparing it with the standard ingredient table. However, it is restricted by individual differences of dieticians and therefore difficult to get correct results. Moreover, it is expensive computationally relying on different patients with different food menus. It is necessary to develop an instrument that can realize measuring and recording automatically to assist dieticians. Hence we have developed a food intake measuring system, which can decrease measuring time and realize accurate management of food intakes, and reduce burden of dieticians. It is also easily for data sharing and managing. In this paper, the construction and operation of the system are reported. Moreover, we propose, a new algorithm for extracting of the food edge. Next, in order to improve the operability of the system the interface between operators and the system is modified. Furthermore, the comparison of experiment results between the proposed algorithm and, the old one are executed. The effectiveness of the algorithm is shown with experimental results.
