Japanese Idol Culture for Regional Revitalization : A Case Study about The Performance of Regional Idols Yuki Tajima This paper examines the regional revitalization as an empowerment by local residents, through a case study about the activities of regional idols in Japan. In this article, I discuss what impacts were had on the members of idolgroups (performers) and how their performances were related to regional promotion, using the framework of performance studies and having semistructured interviews with regional idols and their stakeholders. Refer to Schechner s theory about the functions of performance (2006), the performances of regional idols have mainly four functions for performers : to entertain, to mark or change identity, to make or foster community, and to teach, persuade, or convince. At the same time, this implies the potential for the empowerment of young generations. Key words : Idol culture, Regional idols, Regional revitalization, Performance studies
