Calcification of vertebral arteries of comparison of CT findings and clinical symptoms Keiji HASHIMOTO, Shin KIMOTO, Toshiaki SHIRAKAMI, Ikuo JOJA, Hidehiro HAYASHI, Yoshihiro TAKEDA, Izumi TOGAMI, Harutaka NIIYA, Hiroyuki UEDA, Mitsuharu SHIMIZU, Katsuhiko SUGITA, Yoshio HIRAKI and Kaname AONO Department of Radiation Medicine, Okayama University Medical School (Director: Prof. K. Aono) Mitsumasa KAJI Department of Radiology, International Colony Sanyoso Hospital We analyzed calcifications in 557 computed tomography films of the head. Adnormal findings of calcification of vertebral arteroes were obrained in 36 of the 577 cases. In the 36 cases, vertigo was observed in 24 cases (66.7%), and brain atrophy in 10 cases (27.2%). The calcification of vertebral arteries (arteriosclerosis) correlated significantly with vertigo. Patients with vertigo should be examined by computed tomography for calcifica tion of vertebral arteries at the level of the foramen magnum.
