The Effect of Sprint Drills for Improving Short Sprinting Ability of University Baseball Players AKAIKE, Kohei The ability to generate speed during short sprints is one of the most important abilities for baseball players. The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of two exercise drills for improving the short sprinting abilities of university baseball players. The first exercise was the Wall Drill (WD), which is widely used to improve the movement of sprinters during the acceleration phase. The other exercise was based on the Stretch-Shortening Cycle Movement theory named SSC-Drill (SSC) and aimed to improve step frequency and length in the starting phase. There were 3 groups of subjects, the Normal Training group1 (NT1, n 17), the Normal Training group2 (NT2, n 21), and the Wind sprint & SSC-drill group (WS, n 13). The WS group was the only group that was scheduled to perform both exercises. They performed a 30-meter dash at maximum effort. The mean improvements in the 30-meter dash times of each group were compared. The data were analyzed via analysis of variance to determine the significance of the differences among the 3 groups. There were no differences among the 3 groups, so there was no evidence that WS Group had an effect on the subjects sprinting ability. In conclusion, there were no evidence of the effects from sprint drills. Although those sprint drills had been adopted widely among the track & field athletes of short sprints, more optimal exercise and drills should be existed and we should developed good exercise for baseball players. More detailed investigations will be expected to determine the optimal method for improving the sprinting speed of baseball players.
