What is the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test? The JLPT is a test for non-native speakers of Japanese which evaluates and certifies their Japanese-language proficiency. In 2012, 570,000 people took the test in 64 countries and areas worldwide. It is the largest Japanese-language test in the world. Four key points of the JLPT See more details www.jlpt.jp 1Test prioritizes communicative abilities The JLPT places importance not only on (1) knowledge of Japaneselanguage vocabulary and grammar but also on (2) competence at using the knowledge in actual communication. The JLPT measures comprehensive Japanese-language communicative competence through three elements: to measure (1), and Reading and to measure (2). Communicative competence required to perform tasks (1) Knowledge of Japanese-language vocabulary and grammar (Vocabulary / Grammar) Three elements comprising JLPT (2) Ability to use the knowledge (1) in actual communication Reading 2Select a suitable level from among five levels The JLPT is offered in five levels. Ability to understand some basic Japanese. 3More accurately measures Japanese- language proficiency with scaled Despite best attempts to assure consistency, it is inevitable that the level of difficulty of the test will differ slightly from session to session. Using raw (based on the number of correct answers) could result in varied test for individuals with the same ability, depending on the difficulty of tests. Instead of raw, the JLPT adopts scaled. Scaled are based on the equalization method and allow measurement on the same scale regardless of when the test is taken. 4 JLPT Can-do Self-Evaluation List is offered Test and /fail results alone do not clarify what students can do in Japanese in real life. JLPT Can-do Self-Evaluation List can be used as a reference to get an idea of what successful examinees of a particular level can do in Japanese. See list www.jlpt.jp

Test Registration When will the JLPT be held? In 2014, the test will be conducted on Sunday, July 6 and Sunday, December 7. Outside Japan, however, the test may be held only in July or December in some cities. Find out when and where the exam is held www.jlpt.jp How should I decide which level to take? Please refer to the summary of the linguistic competence required for each level. In addition, you can check specific levels by going over sample questions provided on JLPT Worldwide Official Website. JLPT Can-do Self-Evaluation List may also be helpful. How do I register to take the test? How much is the registration fee and when is the deadline? Please inquire at the local host institution in the country/area where you plan to take the test. (If you want to take the test in Japan, please see the Japan Educational Exchanges and Services website [www.jees-jlpt.jp].) Find local host institutions www.jlpt.jp Notification of Test Results Level When and how do I receive test results? A Score Report will be mailed to all examinees. Examinees will receive a report for the July test in early October and a report for the December test in early March. Examinees can also see test results on the Internet before they receive a Score Report. Results will be available on JLPT Worldwide Official Website in early September for the July test and in early February for the December test. How is or fail determined? Examinees the test when (1) total score is higher than the overall mark and (2) of each scoring section are higher than the sectional. If there is even one scoring section where the score is below the sectional mark, examinees are determined to have failed, no matter how high the total score he/she might have. In addition, examinees fail when they skip even one test section, and they will not receive for any section, including those they completed. Please make sure to apply to the local host institution in the country/area where you plan to take the test. If you cannot apply for the test yourself, please ask a friend or acquaintance in the country/area where you want to take the test for help with registration. In Japan, the JLPT is taken into consideration for preferential immigration treatment as well as an eligibility for various national exams.
