How Christianity can relate to the interchange between the living and the dead in Japan? Yasuhiko Satou Doctoral Student Graduate School of Theology, Doshisha University : Since the start of its missionary work in Japan, Christians have held a negative attitude to Japanese ethnic customs, for example, ancestor worship or rites for the deceased. As a result there has been friction between Christianity and traditional Japanese customs. Because Christianity, which includes Catholicism and many Protestant denominations, is mostly opposed to the concept of ancestor worship, many Japanese Christians seem to adapt themselves half-heartedly to the traditional customs of a society where the majority is non-christian. Ancestor worship remains for Japanese Christianity an unresolved issue, both theologically and practically. How can Christianity, with its scriptural injunction against idolatry, relate to practice of ancestral worship? And what sort of meaning can be found in the concept behind this interchange between the living and the dead in modern Japan? : Ancestor Worship, Famiry System, Monotheism, Dogma of Purgatory, Vatican Council II 29
