Gembaku Abstract The aim of the author s present research is to explore the implications of gembaku (Atomic Bomb) literature, focusing on the relationship between atomic bombings and biopolitics. From among the works of gembaku literature, this article pays special attention to Mitsuharu Inoue s novels, which are included in the complete series of Japanese Gembaku (Atom Bomb) Literature. Mitsuharu Inoue is a Japanese novelist who wrote a number of novels and essays concerning the tragedies of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as the consequences of these bombings. This article discusses what Inoue really hoped to achieve through his five novels concerning the atomic bombs; the novels are analyzed for their meanings and implications for the present world, including for Japan as a nation-state, Japanese society, and the current global population. First, the meanings of Gembaku literature and Gembaku literature studies are briefly
discussed. Then, Inoue s five works concerning the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are analyzed and the implications of each work are examined. Finally, the author concludes that Inoue s gembaku literature was meant as a challenge to society in the present and also the future. This is because his novels clarify the hidden structure not only of Japanese society but also of the rest of the world, where governments failed to keep their people safe; as a result, people tried to assert control over their own lives by abusing others and denigrating human dignity.
