A Contrastive Study of Japanese and Korean by Analyzing Mistranslation from Japanese into Korean Yukitoshi YUTANI Japanese, Korean, contrastive study, mistranslation, Japanese-Korean dictionary It is already known that Korean is similar to Japanese in its grammatical structure. On the elementary stage, students find that they can easily translate Japanese into Korean word for word. But the two languages have many different points at the same time. Those students who are used to translating word for word often make such a strange mistake as Kore wa watashi no booshi ga arimasen. Such mistakes as are found in compositions can be good material for Korean teaching to Japanese students. On the other hand, such mistakes as are found in novels translated from Japanese into Korean supply us with good material not only for Japanese teaching to Korean students but also for Japanese-Korean dictionary. This paper aims at a brief study for Japanese-Korean contrastive study by using a translated novel Mainichi ga Nichiyoobi(Every day is Sunday) as

data, and analyzing mistranslations from various points of view. Chapter 1 deals with mistranslations of word, chapter 2 deals with those of idioms, chapter 3 deals with those of grammar.
