Reports about the Ottoman Empire carried on Jichi Shinpo (1890-93): Achievements of Shotaro NODA, the first Japanese journalist who was sent to the Islamic World Nobuo MISAWA In the history of the relations between Japan and the Islamic World, the disaster of the Ottoman Battleship Ertuğrul (1890) is one of the important incidents. Under continuous campaigns on the Japanese newspapers about this disaster, the Japanese society offered many financial donations for the Ottoman Empire according to Humanism as well as Nationalism, that had the national intention to use this disaster to show the Japanese power against European countries. Among such the Japanese newspapers, Jichi Shinpo put the disaster through their own successful outcome. Due to their stimulus editorials, they incited the public opinion to nationalistic feeling for sending back the 69 survivors to the Ottoman Empire by not any European ships but the Japanese battleship. At last the Japanese government decided to send the two battleships, HIEI and Kongo. Then Jichi Shinpo got the other succession. They could send their own journalist, Shotaro NODA, on board of HIEI to hand over the check of the financial donations. He also sent many articles to Jichi Shinpo during the voyage to the Ottoman Empire. After about 40 days stay of HIEI and KONGO in Istanbul, he decided to remain here due to the petition of the Ottoman Sultan ABDÜLHAMI. T II. NODA is the first Japanese journalist who was sent to the Islamic World and stayed there for two years. We can know his achievements and contributions for the relations between Japan and the Islamic World through his own articles on Jichi Shinpo (1890-1893). It is possible to put his articles into three ordered groups. (1) Records on the voyage of HIEI and KONGO from Japan to the Ottoman Empire (via Hong Kong, Singapore, Colombo, Portside, Suez & Izmir) [Oct. 1890 - Jan. 1891] (2) Records on the stay in Istanbul [Jan.1891 - Dec. 1892] (3) Articles about the Ottoman Empire after his return from the Ottoman Empire to Japan

41-2 2003 [until Aug.1893] There were a few records on the voyage and official stay of HIEI and KONGO written by the Japanese Navy men. But it is difficult to find any vivid descriptions in these records. But NODA made free use of his position as an unofficial journalist. He described many figures and events on his articles through his free and bright actions. Japanese people could get original information about the Islamic World from his articles. Until August 1893, after his return from Istanbul to Tokyo, he wrote many articles about the Ottoman Empire in the style not as comments of current topics but as miscellancy columns. But he suddenly gave up his carrier of the first journalist stayed in the Islamic World. After two criminal cases, he died on 27 April 1904 at the age of 37. It gives feeling of our great regret to his criminal cases, but it is impossible to deny his pioneer achievements on the relations between Japan and the Islamic World. In my next article, I would like to describe his achievements from the analysis on official archives, newspapers and magazines of the Ottoman Empire.
