36 p.157 170 2010 Understanding Australian learners of Japanese Chihiro Kinoshita Thomson University of New South Wales Abstract Australia is known to have a large number of learners of Japanese. The total number of learners, over 360,000, is only after those of South Korea and China. In a country of a small population of 22,000,000, one in 59 Australians is learning Japanese. Who are these learners? This paper attempts to draw a picture of Australian learners of Japanese using statistical data, reports, data arising from classroom teaching, surveys and interviews. The paper describes that 96 of the learners are in primary and secondary schools and some of them have negative experiences in Japanese classes offered as a part of required foreign language hours. Those who elect Japanese in later years may have commitment to Japanese, but some have reactive, rather than proactive, reasons to study Japanese such as that they do not have to write English essays in the Japanese courses. In universities, the majority of the learners are in introductory-level courses, and only 0.1 of all Australian learners can be considered as advanced and professional proficiency speakers of Japanese. A large number of learners are drawn to Japanese by popular cultures such as anime, manga, J-pop and drama. The paper argues that they consume Japanese language study just as they consume other popular culture icons such as the Miyazaki anime and Hello Kitty goods. In the hope that this knowledge about the learners of Japanese contributes to the improvement of the Australian Japanese language education, the paper proposes that firstly the language programs should incorporate popular culture into their curriculum, and secondly policy makers along with language teachers should collaborate in acting upon proposals made by recent reports such as the clear description of career paths for those proficient in Japanese.
