Rilke and language Hideya KUMAZAWA Abstract This paper examines the poetics of Rainer Maria Rilke in relation to his theory of language. Although he has left no essay on language proper, we can infer his view on language from his literary criticisms and his letters. His poetics has been examined from ontological points of views, but when reexmined it through his theory of language, there is not so much difference as pointed out before between his poetics of Ding-gedicht in his middle years and his die Verwandlung ins Innere in his later years. We conclude that they are derived from the same view on language. Key Words Rilke, language, H.v P E-mail kumazawa@ha.shotoku.ac.jp
