No.60 A word from another world New Beginnings Jane Kim Hello, my name is Jane Kim, and I come from America. I will be working as an assistant language teacher (ALT) teaching English with teachers from Higashikawa Children's Center, Elementary, and Junior High Schools. I am excited and looking forward to meeting the students and to being a part of the community in Higashikawa. I arrived in Higashikawa on the 27th of July and have met many people in my short time who have been extremely welcoming and helpful. I was also fortunate enough to witness the town hosting the photo festival and participate in the Dontokoi festival. I was able to try new food, meet more townspeople such as future students, and experience the culture of Higashikawa. The fireworks were also amazing, and I can not wait until the next festival so that I can try to experience I was not able to this year. As a participant of the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme ( JET Programme), I will be working closely with students, teachers, and fellow ALTs to develop methods to increase the usage and exposure of English in and out of the classroom. However, my job is not only to teach English in the school, but also to promote a cultural exchange with my students and the townspeople of Higashikawa. Hopefully, I will be able to share my experiences of living in a different country and culture to promote global awareness and internalization. I also want to, in turn, learn from the experiences and culture of people I will meet here in Higashikawa. I am hoping to be an active and involved member of the community as well. I am very much looking forward to experiencing life in Higashikawa and to fostering good lasting relationships with the people of Higashikawa. Please take care of me. 16
