Department of Geography In order to scrutinize the characteristics of intercultural marriages in Japan following the end of World War II, books on intercultural marriages were collected and bibliography was compiled. Books are the commodity come into the market when the author s intention agrees with that of publishers and the audience accepts the message conveyed by the publication. As books appear to reflect the trend of the society to which authors, publishers, and readers belong, characteristics of the society and the time may be understood by analyzing published books. Following the end of World War II, Japan has experienced rapid economic recovery, high economic growth, oil crisis, low economic growth, bubble economy and its collapse, rural depopulation, declining birthrate and aging population, computerization and globalization, while the traditional form, role, and image of marriage in Japan have been substantially modified and intercultural marriages have increased with spouses of diversified nationalities. Based on the number of publication on intercultural marriages, four periods were identified : The post-world War II period with war brides (1945 1959), the period of high economic growth and social change (1960 1979), the period of globalization and rapid increase of intercultural marriages (1980 1989), and the borderless age and popularization of intercultural marriages (1990 2008). One hundred forty-five items appeared in the bibliography were classified into genres and the themes were analyzed. No books on intercultural marriages were published during the post-world War II period with war brides. During the period of high economic growth and social change when intercultural marriages began to diversify, novels appeared to deal with war brides experiences. During the period of globalization and rapid increase of intercultural marriages, the number of published books substantially increased, which dealt with war brides, children of mixed racial background, lack of marriageable women in rural areas, and Asian brides. A private organization for the purpose of supporting intercultural marriages was launched in this period. During the borderless age and popularization of intercultural marriages, the number of intercultural marriages as well as published books soared. Common topics included the lack of marriageable women in rural areas, the role of matchmaking agent, and reevaluation of war bride and its contemporary meaning, while many authors published comparative studies of culture based on their own private experience. Publication of varied guidebooks assisting the intercultural marriage and married couples reflected such need in the Japanese society. Sociology of intercultural marriages was established with academic publications. Most notable publication trend in recent years is the active role of female Japanese writers who are married to foreigners; comics on intercultural marriages and the daily life as well as foreign area guidebooks based on married life in husband s homeland appear to attract wide audience. The books on intercultural marriages included in my bibliography reflect changing Japanese society in the post-world War II period through the present. It is also suggested that the intercultural marriage may play a role in writing regional geography of Japan. : Intercultural marriage, Japan, book, war bride, cultural geography, regional geography
