(2008) ISSN 1880-4349 Abstract This study was intended to identify problems associated with self-management behavior of children with type 1 diabetes during daily life and school life. We interviewed a high school student with type 1 diabetes and six parents of children who have diabetes to clarify problems related to self-management behavior of children with type 1 diabetes. Problems related to school life were the following: teachers and friends lack of understanding of the illness, prevention and care for low blood-sugar levels, food intake, securing a place for insulin injections, and the diet at school. However, children understand the relative importance of blood sugar management over friends attitudes. Problems of daily life were prevention and care of low blood-sugar levels, relations between appetite and blood sugar management, dietary intake during fever, uptake of the insulin injection, self-management of movement, etc. Children with type 1 diabetes accept the illness, with worry but living positively. We hope for systematic support from schools, administrators, and medical institutions for awareness-building activities, enhanced understanding, and attention to environmental considerations to support children with chronic diseases.
