New connections between graduates and students to foster the desire to support younger students and their alma mater, in light of the Alumni Association Fund to Nurture Future Talent FUNAO, Yuichi (Administrative Staff, Office of Alumni Affairs and Parental Outreach) KAWAGUCHI, Kiyoshi (Senior Researcher, Research Center for Higher Education Administration) TANAKA, Yasuo (Managing Director, Division of Social Collaboration) Graduates (Alumni Association), support for younger students/alma mater, donations, Alumni Association Fund to Nurture Future Talent, student learning and development As Japan s birthrate precipitously declines, an organic connection with its graduates is essential if a university is to continue to be socially valued. Although Ritsumeikan University receives great support from its graduates in both physical and spiritual terms, its record on donations does not match that of other universities. The Alumni Association Fund to Nurture Future Talent was therefore launched as an initiative with the aim of converting the long-held feelings toward younger students and their alma mater held by a broader spectrum of graduates into donations, as opposed to schemes for obtaining one-off large donations from a few benefactors, many of which had previously been implemented. Although some success has been achieved, many issues remain, with increasing support from the young generation of graduates being a particularly important point. We have therefore proposed the implementation of a Ritsumeikan Alumni Program to foster future donors by creating links between students still at the university and graduates, giving them experience to improve themselves and increase their affection for the university, in order to increase their motivation to help younger students and their alma mater after graduation. The aims of the implementation of this program are not only to increase the transparency of the policies for the use of funds and increase graduates motivation to donate (expand the scope of current donors), but also to reinforce the foundations of necessary information on graduates.
