Abstract TANAKA Fujimaro, who is famous for his inspection of Western educational institutions as a member of the Iwakura Mission in the early Meiji era, held the post of the Japanese Minister to Italy from to. In those days, some Japanese groups of inspectors to Europe visited Italy, and TANAKA gave assistance to them especially in Rome. Two Japanese statesmen, TANI Tateki, Minister of Agriculture and Commerce, and KURODA Kiyotaka, advisor to Cabinet, were among them. This paper is a preliminary study through their diaries on what and how they inspected in Italy.
