The Psychologized Doctrines of a Neo New Religion : The Case of God Light Association. Noriko Watanabe Graduate School of Sociology, Rikkyo University Keiko TAKAHASHI, the present leader of God Light Association (GLA), one of the Japanese neo new religious movements from the 1970 s, is called as Mikhail by members, and she offers terminal care for members, which is a kind of spiritual counseling. We can observe from GLA activities a desire for the technique of the heart by the people in the service industry doing emotional labor, and they are forced to compete in individualized and globalized society. By analyzing the technique of the heart, it is argued that the old modern self was just a passive actor who behaves in response to external stimulation, and that today s self should actively control his or her own behavior with the emphasis on self-responsibility. Also, from the view point of GLA s God image, channeling by the founder Shinzi TAKAHASHI and his disciples, and Zen meditation, doctrines of neo new religions in the late capitalism are fairly psychologized.
