Shoko Tanaka 1977 Graduate 6. In recent years many groups and institutions have been created to support cancer patients and their 1 1 2 8 6 7 families. When I got involved in a project to build a psychological support system for cancer patients in the late 1990s, there were only a few of them in Japan. Dr. Fumiyoshi Takenaka, then a surgeon, at the Red Cross College of Nursing, and the group of researchers in nursing, psychology, and medical sociology requested that I organize a research trip to visit different types of psycho-social care and support systems in the U.S. I introduced them to self-help 2,000 groups, hospitals, nursing care facilities, and nonprofit 2 organizations (NPOs); all of which provided psycho-social care and support services in cities, such as Pittsburgh, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Later in 2000 at the Wellness Community in Santa Monica, California, Dr. Takenaka and I received training to become "facilitators" to manage groups of cancer patients and their families. The Wellness Community, an NPO, which has 24 branches nationwide, provides free psychological support. Dr. Takenaka and I spent two months attending patient and family support groups. These sessions were offered 6 days a week. On another occasion I spent 4 5 guidelines and methods to create and manage support groups. It has been used as a textbook by social workers and medical professionals and as a guidebook by cancer patients and their families in Japan. I have cooperated with many academic researchers for various projects, but the working with the cancer patients was one of my favorite and most rewarding experiences. 1977 SELDAA 3 Psychological Support for Cancer Patients and Families weeks at the Wellness Community helping another group of Japanese researchers get trained. The translation was published as Gankanja to Kazoku no tameno Sapooto Gurrupu by Igaku Shoin, ( 200 The book provides basic knowledge of the
