After a short review of his family background, we point out the essential influence of Emile Zola. Then, from his experience of the United States, we suggest his conceptual awakening to Christianity, human real life itself, and universality. On the basis of this understanding, and also through an examination of his short but deep experience of France following the United States, we clarify his modes of cognition of art, human life, État, and Japan. In summary, all of this process can be seen as an intellectual journey to discover society as the empirical and universal reality of human life. Finally, we catch a glimpse of Kafu s encounter with the creeping Étatisme in Japan. This last subject is to be continued.
