14 Discussion Class for Improving Ability to Think and Express Logically A Report of Japanese II Hyoogengijutu A Attempting to Develop Academic Japanese Yuka ITO Abstract The majority of foreign students who enter the faculty of Policy Study fulfill Japanese classes on the level Japanese I, II, III as compulsory subjects in a general education course. It means that the students on Japanese II level are required not to only learn Japanese as a series of language education but also to learn Academic Japanese, whose core is an attitude to study autonomously. It should not be easy for them to obtain an abstract concept of the attitude. Therefore, any possible attempts to get them to learn the attitude even gradually must be carried out through tasks with selected contents encouraging improvement of academic skills and ability to think and to express logically. Japanese II Hyoogengijutu A, a discussion class, specifically focuses on oral presentation, however, it repeatedly assigns the students class work including viewpoints of adequate contents, academic skills, and cooperative awareness. This report shows what Japanese II Hyoogengijutu A aims at, and how it is managed to achieve the aims. Keywords: discussion, Academic Japanese, oral presentation, ability to think logically 96
