Core Ethics Vol. From English Class to Playground of Intercultural Exchange: The Transformation of Global Sessions of Kameoka City, Japan KOJIMA Kiyomi Abstract: Global Session GS started in as an English conversation class for Japanese students to improve their English skills with a native English speaker. However, the monthly sessions, held at a lifelong learning center in Kameoka City, Japan have developed into a playground of intercultural exchange, a place where non- Japanese guests, often non-native English speakers, share their varied cultural perspectives on everyday living in Japan. Focusing on the period from to and based on participant observation, interviews and various documents of GS, this paper gives an overview of the development, operation and philosophy of GS; additionally, it considers the meaning of the group s activities as an example of multicultural symbiosis. Each session starts as a discussion in English between the guest and the GS coordinator. Each participant is free to join the conversation anytime or simply to listen. The participants themselves, not the coordinator or the guest, determine when and how to participate. Therefore, GS has certain affinities with peer support groups, where individuals are encouraged to share with others in order to stand by themselves. In GS, the participants share their questions and worries with the guest and each other to mutually form new intercultural relationships.
