Information such as the sizes of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, the numbers of victims they affected, and their main causes are indicated on the map to provide at-a-glance recognition of disaster risks in various parts of East Asia. The project manager says he hopes the map will be used by companies to assess disaster risks when they expand overseas, and by high schools and universities as part of their education program. The five sports include baseball/softball (candidate venue = Yokohama Stadium), karate (Nippon Budokan in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo), skateboarding (Odaiba environs in Koto Ward, Tokyo), sports climbing (same as skateboarding), and surfing (Ichinomiya Town, Chiba Prefecture). Baseball and softball will be making a comeback since their previous appearance in the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. Test Flight of a Light Aircraft in Hokkaido 話題 ナウシカのメーヴェが飛んだ!? 小型飛行機をテスト飛行北海道 On July 31, the test flight of a light aircraft modeled on the flying machine Möwe, which appears in Hayao Miyazaki s animated feature, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, was opened to the public for the first time in Takikawa City, Hokkaido. The project was planned and produced by Mr. Kazuhiko Hachiya, a media artist in Tokyo. The light aircraft is 9.6 meters wide, 2.7 meters long, and weighs approximately 100 kilograms. The survey predicts that globally, although renewable energies will account for 45% of the total amount of power generation, they will account for a low 33% in Japan. Among the nine countries and regions that emit the largest amounts of carbon dioxide, Japan was ranked eighth. Let s Cook and Eat the Tastes of the Season! た食 つくべよう! 作 しゅんろう! 旬 あじ の味 Pacific Saury Kabayaki Ingredients (four servings) 2 Pacific sauries (sashimi-grade, filleted) Flour (as needed) Seasonings 2 Tbsp soy sauce 2 Tbsp sugar 1 Tbsp sake 1 Tbsp water 2 tsp vegetable oil You can also use sashimi-grade fresh sardines. Preparation 1.Pat the fillets dry with a paper towel. Cut each fillet into three equal parts and lightly coat both sides with flour. 2.Mix the seasoning ingredients together in a bowl. 3.Pour the vegetable oil into a frying pan and preheat the pan at medium heat. Place the saury fillets in the pan, skin-side up. When the fillets turn slightly brown, flip them over and cook for another minute. 4.Wipe away the excess oil in the frying pan, and add the seasoning mix to the pan. In Japan, autumn is considered the season of harvest and the season of the palate, as various foods that whet the appetite come into season. Among the foods of autumn, many Japanese people especially look forward to shin-mai, or new harvest rice. There seems to be something special about the aroma and fresh taste of shin-mai. Many of you technical intern trainees have probably also grown up in a country where rice is the staple food, as in Japan. However, even among the same rice-eating cultures, different countries prefer different types and tastes of rice, as well as differing ways of eating it. The rice cultivation environment also differs according to country. In some tropical regions of Asia, double- and triple-cropping of rice are common, and rice is harvested multiple times per year. In most regions of Japan, however, rice is harvested only once a year in autumn. The Japanese consider seizing the golden opportunity to enjoy the taste of shin-mai to be a small yet exquisite luxury. In relation to shin-mai, we introduce here a recipe for fish kabayaki, which goes well with rice. Kabayaki is a traditional method of cooking fish in Japan, by filleting the fish and baking it in a salty sweet sauce composed mainly of soy sauce, sugar, and sake. Technical Intern Life ぎのう技能 じっ 実 しゅう習 L i f e Autumn is the Season for Sports すぽーつあスポーツの秋 This year, 2016, is an Olympic year. TV broadcasts and news programs on the Rio de Janeiro Olympic and Paralympic Games held in August and September may have inspired many of you to want to play a sport, as well. There are many technical intern trainees among you who are greatly enjoying sports during their stay in Japan, as posted on the electronic bulletin board Ginou Jissyu Days, which introduces the daily life of technical intern trainees ( http://www.jitco.or.jp/ginou_jissyu_days/). For example, the bulletin board is filled with articles from technical intern trainees who have formed soccer, futsal or basketball teams, or have participated in a sports festival sponsored by their local community. The Olympic spirit is expressed by the concept of contributing to world peace and the betterment of the world by elevating the mind and soul, overcoming differences between nationalities and cultures, and embracing friendship, a sense of solidarity, and fair play (as stated by Pierre de Coubertin, considered the father of the modern Olympic Games). Indeed, the best thing about sports is that they can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of differences in culture or nationality. It is now autumn. Autumn in Japan is frequently said to be the season for sports, as it brings lower temperatures and humidity, which makes for perfect weather for any activity and an especially ideal season for sports. This may be a good opportunity for you to take up a sport. If you form a sports team or circle with colleagues from your workplace and play a sport in your leisure time, you can not only get some exercise, but also deepen ties with your colleagues. You can also utilize municipal sport facilities to work out. Such facilities often offer aerobic exercise and dance programs, and are generally open to the public at a low price, so even if you do not have people to play sports with, are not particularly good at sports, or do not understand Japanese too well yet, you will probably find it easy to casually use these facilities. It might also give you a good opportunity to interact with people in your local community.
