1 Trends in screening of Japanese cinema in South Korea The role and significance of Korean Cinematheques and Cinephiles Aesun MIN It is well known that acceptance of Japanese cinema in South Korea changed dramatically after 1998, with the gradual lifting of the ban on Japanese popular culture. Japanese cinema had been introduced at the Busan International Film Festival and other such events prior to the lifting of the ban. Though Shunji Iwai s Love letter had a sensational reception in South Korea, not many works other than animation films succeeded commercially. There were rare cases where the blockbusters in Japan were equally successful in South Korea. Meanwhile, various Japanese films were screened at Korean Cinematheques. While it cannot be said that a substantial fan following has been established among the general public, there are dedicated fans who believe that movies are art and not business. South Korea experienced a cinema-boom in the 1990s. Cinephiles who had attended movie clubs at foreign cultural institutions were a significant influence in the popularization of cinema. Future directors and critics could be found among these Cinephiles. Eventually, international masterpieces were screened at mini-theaters such as the so-called Art Hall on the insistence of some Cinephiles and young people who acquired a passion for the movies. I will consider the role and significance of Cinephiles at a retrospective exhibition and a special exhibition of Japanese directors at Korean Cinematheques since While acknowledging the lifting of the ban as a trigger, I will focus on Korean Cinephiles who were the main audience of Japanese cinema in Korean Cinematheques, and who had come in contact with Japanese cinema before and after the lifting of the ban. 365
