The 14th International Workshop on Slow Positron Beam Techniques and Applications (SLOPOS14) took place between the 22nd and 27th of May at Matsue City in Shimane Prefecture in Japan.

5 The 14th International Workshop on Slow Positron Beam Techniques and Applications (SLOPOS14) took place between the 22nd and 27th of May at Matsue City in Shimane Prefecture in Japan. The conference was attended by more than 100 academics and students from over 14 different countries and 41 institutions, with 30 of those numbers made up by students studying for either their PhD or Masters Degrees. foundry, and visited the museum where we learnt about the history of iron making in the village. The excursion also included a visit to the famous Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine, which is one of the most important Shinto Shrines in Japan. Here, we were given a full tour, as well as a trip to the museum. In the evening, we were given a wonderful selection of traditional and modern Japanese cuisine, after a privately arranged show of the Iwami Kagura Performance at the Matsue Vogel Park. Photo : At the poster session. For myself, SLOPOS14 gave me the opportunity to present three posters alongside my colleagues from my group in London, the UCL Positron and Positronium group. The poster sessions were held over two evenings, and 18 of the 45 posters were presented by students. The relaxed and inviting atmosphere allowed for stimulating discussions of ideas among academics and students alike, and it was a great way to learn about other beams and experiments in the field, as well as a chance to talk about the research that I am performing. The theme of student presentations also applied to the talks, where 11 of the 54 talks were given by students. During the coffee and lunch breaks, where there was always a wide selection of food and drinks available, there was also the opportunity to sit and relax in a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony, which was set up in the conference venue and was a popular attraction for all, with the delicious matcha and wagashi on offer. The balance between academic talks and social program was perfectly combined, and along with the rich heritage of Matsue City and the Shimane prefecture, it was an opportunity not only to expand knowledge in the field of Positron Physics, but an unique chance for many of the international attendees to visit an area in Japan which may not be in the most usual areas to visit. The beautiful city exposed the wealth that Japanese history and culture has to offer, and an incredible variety of sights and activities, which the organisers kindly included in the conference agenda. We were given a tour of the Tatara iron Photo : At the banquet. On the last evening, the conference banquet was held at the beautiful Yuushien Garden, on Daikonshima Island in Shimane. The botanical garden was the perfect location to celebrate a successful conference with all attendees. The exquisite Japanese food and sake was enjoyed by everyone, and the chance to speak to fellow conference attendees that we had met over the course of the week made a delightful evening. It was also announced here that the venue of the next SLOPOS conference would be Romania in As part of the conference bag that we received at the Welcome party and registration, which was wrapped in traditional Japanese furoshiki, we were also given tickets to Matsue Castle which we could visit when we wished. On the final day, I visited the ancient castle, which is one of only 12 remaining original castles in Japan with some of the other conferenceattendees, and we were impressed with the collection of ancient artefacts, as well as the breath-taking panoramic view over the city. I would like to thank the organizers of SLOPOS14 for an incredible opportunity to expand my knowledge in my research field and the chance to meet academics and other students from all over the world, as well as for a wonderful conference and cultural experience.
