An agrarian tradition and a love of the land have shaped their distinctive faith and culture in many ways. The farm provided a crib for nurturing large families and stable marriages, a locus for work, and a haven from the vices of the larger world. Indeed, some analysts have argued that only a rural context could sustain the sectarian ways of Amish life. The coming decades will surely test that assertion as the Amish enter nonfarm occupations in ever growing numbers. This paper tells the story of the Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, who have rather rapidly abandoned their plows for the pursuit of profit. It is, in short, the story of the transformation of Amish society in one particular settlement.
