Gretchen 6 Warren The Correspondence between Kan ichi Asakawa and Gretchen Warren About the Gretchen Warren Letters from Kan ichi Asakawa and Related Papers owned by Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University Takashi JINNO Kan ichi Asakawa ( ) was a professor of history at Yale University. He studied on the comparative history of medieval institutions between Japan and Europe. As an excellent Japanese historian at Yale he raised many academic achievements. Especially with his book titled The Documents of Iriki (1929) he acquired a high reputation among the academics of history in Europe and America. In addition he is very famous for the activities as a peace advocate because he tried to prevent the expansion of Japanese militarism by his writings and his letters to friends. He had many American friends with whom he was in correspondence to discuss the contemporary international situations and to exchange their opinions. Among his American pen friends Gretchen Warren, an American poet living in Boston, was one of the closest friends. They were exchanging their letters regularly from 1935 to After her death her daughter donated the letters from Asakawa to Gretchen to the Beineke Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Yale University. Now the letters are kept by the library under the title of Gretchen Warren Letters from Kan ichi Asakawa and Related Papers.
