18 2013 Yoshikazu MORI Melchior van Santvoort was one of the surviving crewmembers of the Dutch ship De Liefde which arrived in Bungo in Although he was not a Hatamoto as William Adams, he traded with Dutch and English factories in Hirado and did independent business as a free citizen. He was the longest living survivors of the crewmembers of De Liefde and had been staying in Japan almost 40 years, but finally left Japan for Batavia because of the national isolation policy of Japanese government. Almost all of the crewmembers of De Liefde had stayed in Japan of their own will and none of them returned to their home country. On this paper I make clear the life of Melchior van Santvoort and examine a way to live of the Dutch crew who embarked on great ventures all over the world in those days.
