7 PEOPLE Page A man in Kawaguchi ---- Cupola Man Japanese kana well represents the features of Kawaguchi City. pronounced like ah, comes from Arakawa river, in the same manner, like E, imono or iron casting, lilke woo, ueki or garden plants, like eh, eizo or visual image, and lastly like oh, onarimichi or a highway between Edo and Nikko. Cupola magazine had an interview with a Kawaguchi citizen, who has close relations to the word imono or iron casting. A cupola is a blast furnace and one of the important foundry equipment. We could see a lot of cupolas stuck out of the foundry roofs everywhere in Kawaguchi City many years ago. There used to be 600 to 700 foundries in Kawaguchi, but now the number has decreased to about 150 and we can rarely see cupolas in the city. However, Mr. Tamiharu Yabuki, 72 year old, is still working active and indispensable to foundries. What is a cupola? It is a cylindrical furnace made of steel plates. Firebricks lined inside prevent the shell of the cupola from high temperatures. The temperatures can reaches up to 1,600 centigrade. Please tell us what your duties involve? After blasting which means iron melting and casting, I repair the firebricks inside. I m also in charge of the heat control, the mixture of the melting materials, and throwing the materials into the cupola. How many firebricks do you replace for during a single maintenance? It depends how big the cupola is, but I replace fifty bricks to sixty. A bigger one needs about one hundred and fifty bricks. A cupola s firebricks regularly need replacing, and I use about eight hundred to one thousands of them in that case. What is the hardest part of your job? I always work near a cupola, and in any event, the heat bothers me. Even if I do the maintenance work after the operation, I can t touch the cupola until the remaining heat cools down. How long have you been working? I ve been working for fifty-three years which includes a ten-year apprenticeship. What brought you to this job? I came from Fukushima as a member of a large student groups who were supposed to get a job in Tokyo and it s suburbs. The company I worked for had a machine factory and a foundry. At first I worked as an apprentice machine-tool operator. One day I was asked to help work in the foundry. The foundry uses a lot of sand and I shoveled sand off faster than other workers. I was good at using shovels because I was brought up on a farm. I was asked to work in the foundry because of my advantage. I worked there for a while, but the wages were very low. Then one day an acquaintance asked me to work for him with much better wages, and I accepted his offer. What kind of mistakes or accidents have you ever made or had? A cupola has a circular bottom which swings down to the ground to discharge remaining coke and slag after the operation. After the operation I always open it. I once opened it from necessity knowing that the large amount of reaming molten iron was still on the bottom. Right after the bottom plate swung open, against my expectation a mass of molten iron and slag flew off in all directions like an explosion. I got severely burnt and hospitalized. On the contrary, there was a case that nothing came down when I opened the bottom. Shelf-like structures were made with slag and some materials inside the cupola furnace. That made the shell, the outer covering of the cupola, red-hot. We threw water over it to cool down and let things inside bring down. If we didn t do anything, the outer steel of cupola would melt down, and it s very dangerous. If we cool down the cupola with a large amount of reaming iron and slag inside and don t take them out, we can t use the cupola again for good. Your job is generally called takiya or chikuroya, but what is your official title? It is the first grade metal smelting operator. I passed the certifying examination in 1972 and got a certificate from the Labor Minister. I hear you give technical instructions to successors. Do you have any difficulties about it? I rarely give technical instructions these days because of lack of young successors. However, one incident really surprised me when I visited a local factory to give technical guidance. A worker hastily came up to me and asked, Do you have any melting-proof steel plates? That question puzzled me and I rushed to the cupola in the factory. I saw several holes on the lower part of the cupola and several lines of red hot molten iron were gushing out from there. The worker s idea was to cover those holes with melting-proof steel plates. The accident apparently occurred because of poor firebrick lining work or maintenance. At first, I had to teach that there was no melting-proof steel plates. What do you think of our forthcoming/future society and your job? There were about 120 men in the same business around 1980, but now only five men are on active as far as I know. As to successors, young people are not interested in this job because of decreasing number of foundries and getting soiled whilst working. Some companies moved abroad, and large companies foundries have different operational systems from the ones in Kawaguchi. I assume foundries are changing a great deal. I was once asked to go Indonesia to give technical guidance, but I didn t accept it because of my age. If I were younger, I would accept it We often hear the words cupola in Kawaguchi. The name of this magazine is called cupola, too. The building close to JR Kawaguchi is called Cupola, and Kawaguchi s mascot is called cupolan. We can rarely see the real cupola furnaces, but Mr. Yabuki is still active by the side of the cupola and gazing at casting in Kawaguchi. Voluntary Japanese Class and Mutual Understanding Chunmei Wang The former Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) of Kawaguchi City At the Foreign Residents Support Network meeting 1. The role of voluntary Japanese classes For many foreign residents, voluntary Japanese classes are their first point of exposure to Japanese society, and the advice the volunteer teachers offer is of great help to new foreign residents. My Japanese volunteer teacher and I have been close friends since eight years ago. In my experience, I believe voluntary Japanese classes promote international friendship. Fortunately, there are many good classes in Kawaguchi City and Warabi City. 2. Mutual understanding A positive attitude toward mutual understanding with sufficient opportunities are necessary for a multicultural community. Here are some examples of communication problems. (1) Borrowing a textbook In a certain situation a textbook was not returned by a foreign student. I assume he/she might not have understood the rules clearly, rather than actually wanting to break any rule intentionally. A need to display the rules more clearly in multiple languages might be necessary. (2) Cooking Etiquette A teacher was surprised by a Chinese student s way of making Miso soup with a frying pan. I think the student invited to express his/her respect and friendship. He/she, however, might not have bought the right cooking utensils. In any case, eating together is one way of promoting mutual understanding. (3) Rules and Manners Many foreign residents have good manners such as my friends, who clean their neighbourhoods on a voluntarily basis. However, if problems arise, we should seek a concrete solution. Multilingual media is useful to inform foreign residents of rules and regulations regarding their respective areas. (4) Misunderstanding I heard that a Chinese resident was criticized mistakenly by his/her neighbour. To clear up misunderstandings, we need to talk calmly and gently if such situations arise. 3. Talk in simple Japanese Language proficiency greatly effects communication. To avoid misunderstandings, we should keep this point in mind, and try to talk in simple Japanese. I can affirm that voluntary Japanese classes provide opportunities for interactions between Japanese and foreign residents.

What I Think of Blood Types Wang Qin Since I came to Japan, I ve often been asked my blood type, and I take a fancy to this character-linked blood type classification. Now I know a childhood environment or parents personalities influence on a child s development, but I found blood types make people different, too. I ve been in Japan for four years, and to my surprise, many people killed themselves by jumping in front of an on-rushing train. I came to think that those suicides might have a relation to personalities of Japanese people. About 40% of the Japanese population shows blood-type A. Type A people have a strong sense of responsibility and tendency to seek perfection. A serious but pessimistic disposition seems to be vulnerable to pressures and incline to drive to kill themselves. Type B people are optimistic and freewheeling and about 40% of the Indian population shows type B. They seem to be reluctant to obey rules. Many of them seem to favour having their own business and don t like to be salaried workers. Type O is the oldest type of all blood types. People who have this type are bold and self-centered. They laugh or express their angry in a loud voice. Type O people are so active that many of them can become a president of a business company. Lastly, Type AB people are described as stable and calm. The people of this type I have met so far are pleasant, humorous, and interested in many things. People made a fuss over the news of consumption tax hike on TV last week. The news made me disappointed. Mass media should tell the truth, but excessive media coverage makes people pessimistic. I think type A Japanese society worries about trifles too much. Chinese people are always optimistic because 60 % of them are either type B or O. In China, TV stations say, everybody can have better life because of tax hike. Then people become a little bit optimistic. I think Japanese TV stations should broadcast the news the way people can expect a bright future. Then people will become optimistic. There are various blood types and people with different personalites. But I know I can t tell that blood types can destine everything in our life. Whatever the blood type you have, you can t see a bright future without your hard work. Therefore, have confidence in yourself and make an effort to have a better personality, and you will have better life and our society will be better, too.

18 TRAVEL Page Hyosundang Hanok Guesthouse) 93 Anguk-dong (49-14 Yulgok-ro), Jongro / Insadong/Seoul/South Korea Hanok Stay in Seoul Tomoko Iwasaki Have you ever heard of hanok? It s a Korean traditional house. Nowadays foreign tourists tend to seek a traditional housing and hospitality, and prefer hanoks to hotels. Hanoks keep the ancient Korean architecture and societies in their layout. Visitors can stay with a Korean family living there and listen to family history from them. Hanoks are like living museum! In May 2013, I stayed a hanok guesthouse in Anguk. Anguk is located in a convenient place to visit such a popular tourist spots as Bukchon Hanok Village, Gyeongbok Palace, Insa-dong, Gwangwamun, Jongmyo, and Changdeokgung. You can see Sangoje-Hanok guesthouse in Bukchon Hanok Village. This house was used for Korean drama Personal Taste. The guesthouse is convenient for sightseeing and shopping because a subway station is near, and a direct bus service to the airport is available. My host family consists of a married couple and the wife s parents. The guesthouse was built about 150 years ago. The guesthouse was once refurbished to improve the comfortableness and safety for guests. They were asked to take part in hanok homestay program from City Hall. Seoul aims at being an international tourist city where millions of foreigners visit every year. Tourists want to enjoy something unique in Korea. I took a room with a ondol. It was very warm but a bit dried. The host family was very kind and hospitable. The couple can speak English and the wife s father can understand Japanese a little. The wife prepared breakfast for two days. The room is a little bit small but enough for two people. If you visit Korea, why don t you stay in hanok?
