3 Foreword ご挨拶 It is a great honour for me to visit Japan with a large group of representatives of companies and knowledge institutes. In recent years, we have seen a number of high-level visits to Japan. Two years ago, the Royal Family visited Japan on a State Visit and last year Prime Minister Rutte headed an economic mission, together with the Mayor of Amsterdam. This high frequency underlines the importance of our bilateral relationship, especially in the field of trade and investment. Japan and the Netherlands have a long history of excellent ties, dating back to 1600, when the Dutch ship De Liefde arrived on the Japanese shores. From 1609 till 1853 the Dutch were the only Western nation permitted to trade with Japan. For centuries, the Dutch trading post in Deshima was Japan s window to the Western world. This special relationship still strongly resounds today. This remarkable history has helped forge a strong, vital relationship between our two countries. Japan is truly one of our foremost trading and investment partners. Our relationship is an exceptional one, not only in its longevity but also in its substance. In 2015, Prime Minister Rutte and Prime Minister Abe agreed on a Strategic Partnership, which creates synergy and facilitates finding common solutions to mutual challenges like an ageing population, cyber security and the need to diversify our sources of energy. I am proud to be accompanied by a Dutch business delegation that represents our country s expertise in fields like agriculture, horticulture, cybersecurity, and offshore wind energy. All of these companies are here to strengthen our commercial ties, boost investment and innovation, and help broaden and deepen our already strong relationship in the years ahead. I would like to wish all those taking part an inspiring and successful mission. 7 the Dutch are more than eager to share their knowledge about sustainable food production and find intelligent ways to produce high-end food products. With healthy, efficient and sustainable food solutions, we feel confident to join forces with our Japanese partners in this field. Japan and the Netherlands Integrated solutions in common challenges In the year 1600 Dutch traders set foot on land after their ship Love was lost off the Japanese coast near Nagasaki. From that first point of contact the Japanese and the Dutch are involved with each other as strategic partners exchanging goods, knowledge and expertise. As previous visits in recent years underlined, this economic mission again emphasizes our shared goal to start joint-initiatives in agriculture, horticulture and cyber security for integrated solutions in common challenges. Sustainable growth in food production and security When looking at Japan s ambitions in agri- and horticulture, Japan and the Netherlands find common ground. Where natural resources are becoming increasingly scarce worldwide and food security a pressing challenge for both our countries for various reasons, the Dutch and Japanese aim to increase its self-sufficiency in food production with sustainable, efficient and high-tech solutions. With the shared view that robotics are pivotal in reaching this goal, Cyber security is vital for a secure economy With Dutch integrated solutions and Japanese technologies, strategic partnerships will help both countries to make critical infrastructure cyber secure, especially with the Tokyo 2020 Games ahead. With world-class expertise and skills in cyber security, the Dutch aim to team up with Japanese counterparts in order to keep the economy thriving and prosperous. The Dutch strongly believe that this only can be achieved by collaboration between Dutch government, business and academia and their Japanese counterparts. It is therefore that the Dutch public-private partnership in cyber security for Japan largely presents the Dutch promises in this challenging field during this mission. By working together, we can achieve a secure IT infrastructure together, taking into account energy, drinking water, telecommunications, and financial services. Joint forces in common believes As with earlier economic missions in 2014, with the Dutch King and Queen, 2015 and earlier this year, we need to tie the knot with our Japanese partners and start new partnerships in order to further reinforce Japan s and Dutch common ambitions. This is based on the belief that whether it is about increasing Japan s self-sufficiency in food supply by working towards a modern, industrialized and export-oriented sector or bringing the performance of Critical Infrastructure to the highest possible security protection levels, our countries are thought to be ideal partners to come up with sustainable, innovative, high-tech solutions benefitting not only the economy, but our societies as a whole

In this Dutch cluster businesses, governments, and knowledge institutions work together on innovation and knowledge in the fields of cyber security, national and urban security, protection of critical infrastructure, and forensics. They share a common goal: more business activity, more jobs, and a secure world. The security cluster originated in The Hague, where the HSD Campus, the national innovation centre for security, is also situated. In this region alone 400 security businesses realise more than 25% of the national turnover in security and employ 13,400 people. Nationwide there is a turnover of 6 billion euros and 61,500 people are employed in the security domain. 24 DUJAM Desk Holland Home of Wind Energy (HHWE) Justus Schoemaker Director and Owner The DUJAM Desk is based in Tokyo, Japan, and has started operations in January The owner and president of the company, Justus SCHOEMAKER, is a master mariner with over 25 years on-board and onshore experiences in the Dutch and Japanese maritime cluster. The objective of DUJAM Desk is to connect the Dutch and Japanese maritime clusters at governmental, association and individual company level. This is primary in the area of innovative products and services which are widely available in the Dutch and Japanese clusters like, offshore oil & gas, offshore wind and eco technologies. The services provided by the DUJAM Desk are: company representative consultancy project management distributor / agency DUJAM Desk is located within the office of the Japanese partner company Exeno Yamamizu who has a big network in the Japanese maritime cluster and can act as agent for Dutch companies. Arjen Schutten Managing Director HHWE is an independent exporters association representing the interests of Dutch wind power companies abroad. HHWE s mission is to initiate and support marketing and promotional activities that will positively influence the image of the Dutch wind energy sector on emerging wind energy markets. Regarding offshore wind, the members of HHWE are very active in Japan to set-up partnerships. In June 2015 HHWE signed an MoU with Japan Wind Power Association (JWPA).
