According to a survey by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the average number of cavities among 12-year-olds decreased from 4.30 in 1989 to 1.05 in The ratio of children with cavities has also dropped by almost half, from over 90% to the 40% level. The reason is attributed to the widespread household habits of preventing cavities, such as brushing one s teeth before going to bed and using a fluoride mouthwash. While cavities are on the decrease, the number of dentists is increasing. 3 Greenhouse Gases Reach Record High Let s think about the entire planet You have probably heard of the word global warming. On November 9, 2015, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced that global emissions of major greenhouse gases, which are the causes of global warming, have reached a record high. Some of the major greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane and chlorofluorocarbons (CFC). Their emissions are said to be increasing continuously. Among them, carbon dioxide accounts for the largest share of emissions, and also has the greatest impact. It was announced that carbon dioxide emissions have increased roughly 1.4-fold compared to the year 1750, when manufacturing industries thrived worldwide, and that other greenhouse gas emissions have also reached record levels. Why are greenhouse gas emissions continuing to increase? Human beings mine and burn coal and petroleum so the manufacturing industries can thrive, but this causes carbon dioxide and other gases to be emitted into the atmosphere in large amounts. Another reason is that trees, which play an important role in absorbing carbon dioxide, are being cut down, and forests are steadily disappearing from the earth. If carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases increase, the temperature rises, and global warming advances, it is said that the change in the global climate will cause extreme weather throughout the world and affect plants and animals in adverse ways. As there is much that is yet unknown about the impacts of global warming, many studies are being pursued. However, we humans must think not only of ourselves but also of all plants and animals on earth when we use petroleum and other energy resources. Greenhouse effect What is the greenhouse effect? Heat from the sun that reaches the earth warms the ground. After a while, the ground releases the heat into the atmosphere. Some of that heat travels into outer space, but some is absorbed by carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to once again heat the earth. As this is similar to the mechanism of a greenhouse that is made to retain heat, it is known as the greenhouse effect. As announced in the Technical Intern Information section in this issue, the JITCO Japanese Essay Contest will be calling for entries again this year from April 1. It will be the 24th time for the contest to be held. Below, we introduce a composition titled Re-visiting Japan, which was chosen for the First Highest Prize in the 20th contest and gives a realistic account of the Great East Japan Earthquake, in which a massive earthquake and tsunami wrought immense damage to the Pacific coastal areas primarily in the Tohoku region. While March 11 of this year marks the fifth year of the disaster, reconstruction efforts are still going on today in the affected areas. Through a recollection of this disaster, we hope all of you will once again contemplate and discuss issues related to reconstruction assistance and disaster prevention. *The Japanese composition is shown exactly as written by the technical intern trainee. The company where I work is located in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. On March 11 of last year, I was caught in a huge earthquake and tsunami at the company. We were still working at that hour. A sudden shaking made me panic. Everyone else also ran around in a panic. Mother, where are you? Father, where are you? I want my mother and father! I m scared. So scared! I wailed like a small child who has just awakened from a nap. It still frightens me to think about that day. There were many after-shocks. We calmed down somewhat after we got outside, however none of us even imagined that something even more terrifying was approaching us. Everyone worried about their houses and families and went home. I returned to my dormitory with a friend and an office staff member in a car driven by the company president. On the way, I heard a loud roaring sound like I had never heard before, and immediately thereafter, a mass of water rushed toward our car. It was a huge tsunami. 7 I had no words. The force of the tsunami swept us away in our car, when a fence suddenly appeared in front of us and our car tilted so that it felt like we were going to flip over. I thought my life was over, and braced myself to die. I thought of my family back home with tears pooling in my eyes, and silently bid them goodbye. It was then that a miracle occurred. The fence broke, and our car returned to upright. We were again carried away by the turbid water and I prayed in my heart for someone, anyone, to save us, but it was a futile wish. The tsunami gained strength, and water began pouring into our car. This time, I felt that God had decided on my death, and there was no escaping it. However, then another miracle occurred. Our car hit something and suddenly stopped. It was the first-story roof of an unknown house. The impact broke the rear window of our car, and we were able to get out. I barely remember, but the four of us desperately put our strength together and made it out of the car. For the first time, I felt a sliver of hope to live. We endured the cold night, and on the next day, we were able to go to the president s house. I remember feeling relieved. I think it was the most frightening experience I have ever had in my life. There were even moments I expected to die. However, a miracle occurred more than once. I was convinced that the miracles were not coincidental, but that my family and ancestors back home had protected me. Today, I have resumed my training. The me of two years ago would never have returned. I have met many people since coming to Japan, including, foremost, shacho-san, senmu-san and shacho-san s wife. They helped me and encouraged me, so I could lead a fulfilling life. I was struck by the kindness and thoughtfulness of the Japanese people, and their spirit of solidarity in accomplishing something together. This was also evident during last year s earthquake disaster. Even when everyone is struggling through a difficult time, the Japanese people help and care for others who are in need, and put others before themselves. I think the Japanese people are amazing.
